I have to get a car running that has been sitting for 17 years?
I have to get a 79 Ford Mustang with a in-line 4 running so it can be moved out of a parking garage that it has been parked in. Obviously it will need some fresh gas, any ford enthusiast have any tips to offer?
The first issue is to determine whether or not the engine is SEIZED or not. If it turns over… Its a piece of cake. A battery and a small bottle of fuel attached to the fuel system near the engine. If the fuel system is INTACT… You might get away with fuel into the tank.
How about a tow rope and towing it to a place where you can either work on it properly or dispose of it? If I were you I would either fix it up to the point where it could be used or sold, or not waste any more time or money on it.
A decent car battery, a can of Aerostart (or equivalent), a can of WD40 or similar. Tools
Remover plugs & squirt some WD40 in each cylinder. Let it sit for 1/2 hr. Fit battery, remove low tension lead from coil temporarily. Try to turn over engine with starter. Spin it over a few times. Replace plugs & low tension lead. A 1 second squirt of Aerostart into air cleaner (or direct into carby if air cleaner comes off easily. Try to start it
Get a tow? Truck
Get some buddies together and push it out of the garage…
Buy them some burgers and beers afterwards.
Call for a tow or get some guys to push it. It will be much cheaper than to get it running.
If you NEED to move the car, push or tow it. Attempting to start an engine that has been sitting for 17 years without proper preparation is just asking for more trouble.
After 17 years just about everything will be suspect. Apart from the engine that may be rusted solid, you need to think about brakes and tyres, a new battery certainly, probably anything you can think of will need attention. Your best option is to get it taken away on a trailer to a safe location where you can work on it, or straight to the junkyard
- What is Ford's excuse for not reporting this alleged crime 36 years ago when a proper investigation could have been done? Even if you say that the police would have not taken it seriously back then, it would still have been on file and came up during the FBI background check.
- What parts will I need for a 2005 Ford Taurus 3.0L SFI DOHC 6cyl that has been sitting for 2 years? Right now my list includes: battery, wiper blades, air fliter, front and rear brake pads and all 4 tires? Also what mechanic services will I need? So far that lists includes: a tune-up, oil change, and an engine flush. Your help would be very appreciated.
- Truck has been sitting for like 8-10 yrs? We have a truck that has been sitting for like 8-10 yrs. And my son wants it for his first truck. I looked in the engine and there has been mice making nest in it. It has tons of rocks and trash in it. But i don't see any wires chewed. It's a Ford Ranger Splash 94 with only 55,000 miles on it. Do you think it would be worth it to tow it to get running again?
- What should be done to a car that s been sitting for a long time? My parents bought me and my brother a 2001 ford mustang about a month ago. It has 88,000 miles on it and the previous owner (not the original owner) had been letting it sit for about 6 months I think he said. The car obviously hasn't been driven that much. I know I should obviously change the oil and all filters. I don't know too much about cars but am learning and was just wondering from any mechanics out there what all I should do to it.
