Can Ford trace my vin number and give me details about previous owners on my 66 mustang

I have a 1966 mustang and i heard that if you go to a Ford dealership that the can give you the list of owners, but i don't know if they can since the vin number is only 11 digits and not 17. I can't use the data plate because its not original.

No, not on a vehicle that old. At best they might be able to tell you what dealership it was delivered to. After that, ownership has to be determined through state DMV title searches but that's difficult because of the Public Records Act and its privacy clauses. There are companies who, for a fee, can conduct motor vehicle records searches. Ford can conduct vin number searches of their dealership system and if the vehicle has been in for maintenance that information may turn up, but it only goes back to the 1990's in most cases. Likewise, there are companies that can research insurance records for claims on file for that vin number, but again the electronic records on that don't go very far back. Since you don't have the data plate you're pretty much S.O.L.

In short, nope.

No. Ford can tell you which dealer it was shipped to, maybe.

Of course they can trace the VIN number. You heard wrong. They 100% will not give you information about previous owners. To do so would break a heap of privacy laws.

Not that old. Might be able to give you original owners name. But it might have been sold several times and ford doesn't keep track of that. Bet it wasn't serviced at ford anymore when the warranty was over. You would have to ask who you bought it from then ask him who he bought it from and so on to track it back to original owner

Hi No as VIN was only introduced in 1980. Before this it was chassis numbers and engine numbers.

Ford can't anyway, but it would take a court order signed by a Judge for the state to see what they could find.

  • Subaru Liberty or a Mondeo Wagon? What is the importance of previous km's when purchasing second-hand? I'm in the market for a second-hand car. I have narrowed my shortlist to a Subaru Liberty or Ford Mondeo Wagon, about 3-4 years old. They can fall in the same price range, however the Subaru will have significantly more km's on the odometer. Given the Subaru's reputation for longevity, however, is this important? Is it better to get a Subaru with 150000 on the clock, or a Ford Mondeo with around 60000km?
