Ford KA reving when in idle?

I have had this problem for a couple months now with my 2005 ford KA. It revs itself when I'm idling or has quite high revs when idling. The first time I took it to a garage they did something with the alternator, it seemed to go away for a couple days. The next time I took it to a garage they stripped clean the throttle body. This seemed to work for a couple days, and now the problem has come back again. I'm getting pretty fed up of having to spend a fortune getting nothing done. Can anyone suggest what this could be? An engine diagnostic test came back with nothing wrong.

A high idle speed is often indicative of a vacuum leak. The easiest way to trace down a vacuum leak is with an automotive smoke machine. If your current shop has one, ask them to try using it to find a vacuum leak. If they don't have a smoke machine, find a shop that does because searching for a possible vacuum leak without any assistance from check-engine codes or a smoke machine can be like finding a needle in a haystack.

  • What would cause my 2004 Ford E350 5.4L 8cyl to have 2,000 rpm at idle and in neutral? The van has 113,000 miles. Plugs changed at 100,000 miles. When started the rpms are at 2,000. Occasionally they will drop 100-200 rpm for 1-2 seconds then right back to 2,000 rpm. While driving there's no problem as long as the van is in drive. Once in a great while after driving around for a while it will be normal rpm when I put it in park. But usually works its way back to 2,000 rpm. Should I try to clean the throttle body or change the tps sensor? Any help will be much appreciated.
  • Why does my Ford Ranger start rough idle when engine is hot? I have a 2002 Ford Ranger XLT 4X4 with 4.0 litre SOHC engine, it starts good when cold, but I get a rough idle start when the truck was already used and heated up. Engine diagnostics show nothing, I changed the air filter a month ago, changed platinum plugs and plug wires last year, regular oil and filter changes been done. I'm running out of ideas on the cause of this rough idle. Any suggestions, please answer.
  • Did I damage My engine die to over reving? So yesterday i was driving and accidently pulled out infront of someone and downshifted and hit my redline 6000 rpm and the truck drove normal after that for 10 miles. I got home turned it off and went inside. Later that night i went outside and started it and it started to miss really bad and idle rough. Once i get it past 2000 rpm it runs normal. 2001 Ford Ranger 2.3 I4
