Is it cheaper to buy a car that needs work? Read more?

I want either a 1967 chevy impala or a 1972 ford pick up. Would it be cheaper to buy a car that needs some work or a car that doesn't need any work? My moms friend is a mechanic and he would do work for me cheaper than if i went to a regular mechanic and got work done.

Unless you are a mechanic and can do the work yourself, get a car that doesn't need any work. With many older cars the parts can be difficult to find and there could potentially be a lot of expense involved in repairing them.

It's unlikely you'll find an Impala of that year without paying through the nose no matter what shape it's in. A bump side Ford on the other hand is very common and easy to find parts for. If you want to find advice or parts, find a forum like

  • Which car is cheaper to drive, accounting for mpg and gas prices? Ok so my ford excursion is diesel and gets 14.5 mpg and diesel prices cost around $2.91. While my Honda Odyssey is gas and gets 21 mpg and gas prices are around $3.24. If it matters the excursion has a 44 gallon tank and the oddysey has a 20 gallon tank.
  • Do you think the Brand New Ford ranger needs more engine options? I think the 2.3 Ecoboost is very capable, but in many cases, stronger engines distinguish more premium (or) sportier trims from the Base trim. Do you feel that higher priced trims need a V6 to compete against others in the segment?
  • Should I sell my car and get a cheaper one? I currently own a 2014 Ford Mustang valued at roughly $9670 with 47,000 miles on the odometer. I recently accepted a job that will require I commute 2 hours a day or 18,400 miles per year. I'm currently looking to buy a used car for $1500 or less so that I can save up for a better car in a year or two. Should I sell my mustang?
  • If a New car cost more than your home why buy it? I have a house that I own outright. And it cost me around $30,000 and a New car from the Ford dealer will cost me about $35000. Why buy it? Isn't car just suppose to get you from point A to point B and back to point A?
