How to clean a gear stick?

I split an energy drink into my gear stick. Now it is super sticky making it hard to pull to switch gears. I bought my car used so the plastic around the stick has been broken so its an open hole. How do i clean this without having to take it in? I know i need to replace the gear stick eventually but can't afford it right now. I have a ford contour 96

I'm not at all familiar with the Ford Contour, but it depends a lot. If this is a transverse front wheel drive, then likely there's only linkage by the stick, and the hot soapy water, followed by some lubricant like WD40, would be fine. But if this is an inline rear wheel drive with manual transmission, then the stick could be right over the actual transmission, and then you could not use water. Best to remove the cover around the shifter and have a look. You will easily be able to then tell what needs to be done.
But remember that hard shifting is often a sign of clutch adjustment being necessary, on a manual transmission.

WINDEX!

Pour a lot of soapy water into it haha

Its a front wheel drive automatic transmission. I looked on google and it said some vehicles it can ruin the connections if you dump soapy water into it. But if i dumped my energy drink into it and it didn't cause damage then you would think it would be fine. So Motorhead I'm thinking the first option you gave would be my best bet? Before the spill it shifted just fine besides the parts being broke. My gears don't line up with the red line. I have to count each click back. Like 1 click reverse. 2 n. 3d. And so forth. I was told by a mechanic it will eventually all need replaced. But for now it works fine. Except in the winter sometimes its hard to push in the button from the cold weather. I just need my car to last me a couple years until i can afford a new car.
