Is it possible to trade my 2012 Ford Fusion for a small suv and camper?
I have a 2012 Ford Fusion I'm thinking about trading it for a small SUV and camper. We're looking at purchasing a 31 ft. Travel trailer to live in over the next year or two It's just my husband and I. Is this something that could be worked out and if so how? Or would is it cause a financial loss to me? Is it more trouble than it is worth?
Seeking knowledgeable responses please.
This will cause a huge financial loss. If you are financing the car you will take a loss of several thousand dollars. And you will need to borrow a whole lot more unless the SUV and trailer were really old.
For the loss you will take you could instead rent a camper for the time you want to go camping.
Dealer make about 30% on every deal, so you so not want to go through a dealer.
Instead, you want to sell your car on craigslist, AutoBuyer, or something similar, and then buy the camper and small truck. Do NOT recommend an SUV because they are 4WD, and that adds lots of useless weight and bad mileage. A crew cab small pickup in 2WD is much better, or even a small 2WD minivan.
However, regardless of who you buy from, you should have a trusted mechanic check it out. There often is hidden accident damage, higher miles than shown, etc. But a good mechanic can tell. One of the things to look at is paint over spray on the window rubbers, in the trunk, etc., from accident repair. The pedal rubbers, seats, floor mats, etc., can verify the wear.
A typical 31 foot travel trailer will weigh around 7000-8000s pound dry. And will weigh around 7800-9000 pounds loaded. A small SUV is not going tow this kind of load. Realistically, to comfortably tow this kind of weight. You're going to want a 3/4 ton pickup (F-250, Silverado 2500 or Ram 2500) or a full-sized SUV (Suburban/Expedition). I would lean more towards a diesel 3/4 ton or 1 ton pickup.
The costs of this will hugely exceed the value of your Focus. A new 31 foot travel trailer will set you back around $20k-$35k. Even a used diesel 3/4 ton truck will cost at least $20k with new ones costing around 45k or more. Your Focus is probably worth around $10k-$12k on a trade in. So you're going to have significant of pocket expenses.

- Small SUV for teen driver? I'm only 15 now, but my mom told me I should start researching cars and SUVs. We have agreed on Nissan Rouges, Subaru Foresters, and Toyota RAV4s (possibly Honda CRVs) NO OLDER THAN 2009… My mom drives a Subaru and really wants me to get the Forester. The problem is, Foresters are more expensive than any of the others. They are all about the same size, same mpg. What would you recommend of the four? Which is the best for a new driver? Any other suggestions? (No ford, Chevy, jeep, etc.)
