My car won't jump start but the lights works. It just makes a single click noise that's it?

It's a 2001 Ford Focus what could be wrong?

Get a jump from someone else

The starter is likely bad. Charge the battery on your car, replace the battery terminals and try again. No joy, time for a tow.

First step is t oclea nthe battery & heavy cable terminals. You need bright metal to mental contact both ends of both the positive & negative leads from the battery. (You also need good jumper leads - a lot of the cheap ones make very poor contact where the clamp fastens onto the cable.

The single click makes me sure it's a loose connection. BOTH ENDS of Both Battery Cables need to be Clean, Dry and Tight. The Starter takes 100 times the power of the lights. If your Ground wire to the block is loose it will cause it. When you check the Positive Starter Wire disconnect the Negative Terminal on the Battery. If it's a soft click it could be the Starter Relay, if you have one.

The heavy duty ground wire from the negative terminal on the battery isn't making a connection at the engine block.

Hit the starter with a hammer the magnets get stuck every once in a while

The battery is probably flat or the starter motor is rooted? More info needed to give a better answer.

Either you have bad battery connections, a bad set of jumper cables, a bad starter, or a seized up motor.
Any oil on the dipstick?

The battery may be low, but not too low to run the lights, however, it takes much more juice to run the starter. My crystal ball says why and you won't like that. Have the battery checked.

Enough juice for the lights but not enough to start the car. Get the battery tested.

  • Car won't start, power works and makes a single click noise? I have a 93 ford Taurus. When I try to start my car, it was just making a single click noise and then would eventually start after I tried a couple more times. The other day it wouldn't start, still made the single click noise, I tried a couple more times and now it doesn't make the noise at all. The power works, my headlights don't dim or anything like that. I've had my car jumped and that still didn't work so I'm curious as to what it could be?
  • Ford F 450, 1997, gas gauge works, but switch won't go the second rear tank? I replaced the switch same thing, only reads front tank and rear tank stays full. I had the solenoid replaced on the frame 15 months ago, could that be bad again, that is over $400? I have two gas tanks, front and rear. Switch won't switch to rear tank? Reads front tank only, even when switched to rear tank. I replaced the switch, cost $62. The rear tank is full, Edith. It is full because I can't access the fuel.
  • Noise works, but when I push it, it also makes a clicking/rattling noise? I have a 2012 Ford Focus, and while the horn works, and sounds (as it normally does), when I press it, it also makes a weird clicking/rattling noise (also kinda like a jingle sound - hard to describe). It sounds as if it's coming from behind the center console/under the center console, but it's hard to tell. Any ideas what it could be? With any answers - any advice on how to fix it? Question should say HORN Works
  • In drive I push down on the gas pedal but the car won't move. It will then jump and drive normally? Question: as I put my car in drive and push on the gas, my car will make the sound as it should if it were actually moving, but doesn't at all even if I floor it. Then finally it will just jump and start driving normally. I have a 2003 Ford Explorer and yes my engine light is on. Even if I stop at a red light this will happen. Any info is appreciated.
