My car overheated, power steering is out, and battery light is on?

So for the last few days I have smelled a burnt smell when I turn on my heater, then today I was driving home and all of a sudden the power steering went out and the temp. Gauge was in the red. I went back out a few hours later when it had cooled down and turned it on, the power steering is still out and the battery light is on. There doesn't seem to be any leaks. What could be wrong? Oh, and I drive a 2003 Ford Focus ZX3.

Accessory drive belt is broken / missing / loose.

This is the rubber belt on the front of the engine that drives the water pump (overheating) Power steering pump (not working) and alternator (battery light on)

BTW, if the temp gauge goes into the red, STOP the car. You can do serious damage to the engine driving it like that.

Mr. Lanab nailed it. Your "serpentine belt" is laying on the road somewhere. If you have a battery charger, hook that up until you get a new belt. (Your battery took a beating) Pick a "cool" day to go get it fixed. Find a shop that knows you are coming so you don't have to drive around and overheat.

You need a new belt; in the good ol' days a lady's stocking could be used as an emergency get you home kit.

Uhh, belt?

One point to mention is that if you smelled a burning smell. You probably not only lost a belt but may also have a accessory item that is locking or locked up i.e. A/c compressor pulley, alt., or water pump

Thanks everyone! The pulley and belt were broken. All fixed and running good now.

  • Power steering went out after driving through water? I had to drive to work in a storm today. I drive a 2007 Ford Taurus 105, xxx miles, and I went around a corner and I completely lost steering in my car mid turn. This is the first time this has ever happened to my car. I slowed down drastically and then maybe 10 seconds later my power steering came back with a loud screech. Should I be worried about it going out again? I checked my steering fluid and it's topped off. Anything I can do to prevent this from happening again?
  • Battery light came on in my car and steering wheel locked but the car was still running what could it be? I drive a 1999 Ford Taurus I was pulling out of a parking lot and the battery symbol popped up and my steering wheel locked but the car didn't shut off. I applied the breaks slowly and the battery symbol went away and my steering wheel unlocked. I do believe I have some issues with the "computer" in the car i was wondering if this was the cause
  • Car battery putting out too much power? So I have a 1991 Ford ranger. Up until today everything has been fine it has a rebuilt engine and a ton if new parts. The battery is an optima red top. The truck has a voltage meter but the person I bought it from put in a custom console that has a digital voltage display. Usually it reads around 12.5 volts sometimes more sometimes less. But today it's reading around 14.3 volts and the needle on the gauge moved up past what would be considered normal. Any ideas what could be causing this?
  • What does a battery light and oil light that turn on a 2012 ford Fusion se mean? Yesterday I was at a stop sign and my car was on and the engine turned off and the battery and oil light came on so I turned off the car and turned it back on and it was working again so I decided to go to autozone so then I had them check the battery and they told me the battery was good and the alternator was good then they checked the car for any codes and it had 0 codes so I don't know what's wrong with my car it still runs but it shut off on me twice yesterday
