Is 160k miles to much for a used car?
About to buy my first car as I passed my test last week. I found a car I like for £900, a Ford Focus 2007 diesel. I can afford the insurance and will be going to look at it. However it has 160,000 miles on it and consider that very high. I can't really afford to be picky though, but is that to many miles? Would you buy a car with 160k miles on it?
My friend just told me that he paid $5,000 for 93,000 miles. The price you're paying seems about average.
The problem with buying cheap cars is that they're often unreliable. They will slowly drain your pocketbook with various repairs. In many cases, it's better to save a substantial amount by relying on mass transit. A brand new car is often only $10,000-12,000) and comes with a good warranty and peace of mind.
The used car markets are junk right now because people are too poor to afford new cars. They're driving the marginal income earners out of car ownership altogether. Traditionally, this demographic would buy a new car every few years.
Bought one with a lil over 200k on it and its a great vehicle… It all depends on is maintained and if it has good records of such… An 04 jeep sweet running motor
Here in the states small diesels are non existent, the larger ones in trucks often last for hundreds of thousands of miles. Your MOT test is insanely picky so the struts surely have already been replaced as well as any leak i presume.
Considering the car is 11 years old I'd be more concerned with age and mechanical condition then I would mileage.
The average is 12-15 thousand miles per year so an 11 year old car with 160 IS NOT considered high for the age of the car.
Sounds like it's been spared a lot of town driving. Diesels don't mind big mileages so as long as it's not too noisy and doesn't have any serious leaks it's worth a punt.
Hi yes originally designed to last 150k miles by FORD motor company. So anything over that figure it is going to show signs of wear. Like being difficult to start. Bits dripping off inside looking tatty. Tires will need replacing hoses as well wipers and frequent oil changes. Along with wheel bearing needing replacement with shocks as well. So it becomes a money pit.
Mileage alone doesn't tell you the complete story. The service history of the vehicle is also important to know if this vehicle has plenty of life remaining or if it's running on borrowed time.
I'd rather buy a 160K mile vehicle if it has a proven and up-to-date maintenance history compared to another example of the same vehicle with only 100K but without any service history documentation.
It depends on how its been taken care of. Ask for maintenance records on it.
I don't know where you live, but be sure Diesel is available in enough places near you before you buy it.
Whether or not any car is worth buying eventually comes down to price-for-condition. The less you pay, the less you should expect out of the car. If the car is very cheap (like £900 cheap), then it's a lot easier to overlook minor flaws and to not expect the car to last forever and ever than if you spent more for it.
Long story short, 160K miles more of an issue if the car is more expensive. For a very low price, I wouldn't worry about high mileage because for a very low price, I wouldn't buy any car expecting it to last a really long time problem-free in the first place.
- How much money should i put away each paycheck for a used car? I'm 16 years old and I currently work at shop rite; I had a 1998 Ford Taurus for 7 months but i only paid $900 for it so i can learn how to drive but now it will not start at all! Now I desperately need a new car because I'm about to start college but i don't want to put that pressure on my parents because they need to pay for my college and nursing books! I work part time at shoprite and I get $100-150 every friday & I only saved up $200! Please give me advice!
- Front Bumper is gone on the used car I just bought. How much to fix it? Is it safe to drive? I just bought a used car for $1300 the only issues with it our the rear suspension needs to be fixed and the front fender is missing completely. There's no metal at all and no cover so the bottom half of the radiator is exposed. Its an 02 ford Taurus and I'm wondering how much a complete new bumper is going to cost like a ball park estimate? And is it safe to drive it without the front bumper temporarily?
- Car consumes 3/4 Quart of Oil for first 1000 miles and basically stays at a 1/4 for another 4000 miles? I have been noticing this for sometime, no visible leaks underneath, no drips either and I have been looking and checking pretty routinely, what would cause after a oil change for the car to consume 3/4 of a quart for the first 1000 miles and then basically stay at a 1.4 for another 4000 miles? Vehicle is 2006 Ford Taurus SE OHV 3.0 note. When I say a quarter. I'm talking about the 1/4 line (amount) on the dipstick from full to re-fill
- Is getting a lot of miles on a car actually bad for the car if the car is well taken care of? Back story: I have been using my car to visit a guy who lives about an hour away from me, and my mother has said that I "don't need to be putting all those miles" on my car. It is a well-taken care of Ford mustang with about 125,000 miles on it, and I have not noticed any issues at all. Cars are meant to be driven, in my mind. Is putting mileage on a care actually a bad thing, or is mother probably pulling an overprotective mother of an adult child?
