Do petrol cars have Coil Packs?
Sorry if this sounds like a ridiculous question but I'm clueless when it comes to the mechanical side of cars. My car is running lumpy and I've been told to try changing the coil pack as its common to break on these cars (2004 Ford Focus 1.6 Petrol). I said to my brother about it and he told me that no petrol cars have coil packs. I think he's wrong so I want a second opinion. Can anyone shed some light on this?
Thank you for your replies in advance and Merry Christmas!
Yes, petrol engines have coil packs unless they are older vehicles that still use a distributor ( in which case it still has an ignition coil but one coil supplies the juice and it is the distributor's job to send the electricity to the correct cylinder and the correct time ).
It's diesel engines that don't use ignition coils as they are compression-ignition. A petrol engine requires a spark plug to ignite the fuel/air mixture within the cylinder and that spark plug is fired by electricity supplied from the ignition coil(s).
Since both you and your brother have no clue how to diagnose car problems how about you quit guessing and let an experienced mechanic fix your problem before it ruins the motor?! You will just waste your money trying to play mechanic.
All gasoline cars have to have a coil to fire the spark plugs. It can be one big coil for all of the plugs or a smaller coil, one for every plug.
- I have a ford 2001 ford Galaxy 2.3 petrol needing Electric Windows will only work from the the drivers side. I checked the wiring within the doors and repaired any broken wires but still nothing. The drivers switch has a child lock for the window but this doesn't make a difference if on or off. Is the anything els I can check? Could it be the drivers switch at fault? Looking for some simple tests I can check before I put money in to this. Cheers Paul
- My ford focus has just had a new coil pack fitted, but the engine management light is still on? The garage has said that it could be the auto sensor… What is this? Will it be an expensive fix? Advice please!
- I have a Ford focus lx 1.6 petrol and it is a st replica can I put an st engine in? The full car is st exept under the hood, engine, air filter ect. I want an st obviously but don't want to pay the money for one just yet, could I put an st engine in 2l or 2.5l if not what other more powerful engine could I put in? If so how much would it cost and what else would I need to change? Such as brakes and stuff?
- Do I have a bad ignition coil? Today I was driving on the highway at 70 mph and all of a sudden the accelerator was having no effect. I kept pushing and releasing it trying to get it to catch, but it finally died on the side of the road. I started the car right back up and it made it home fine(several miles). I have a 2000 Ford Focus and I'm hoping this is a coil going bad and not a fuel pump. First time it's happened. What do you think?
