Dim Low Beam on 2001 Ford Focus?

A few days ago, I tried replacing my headlight bulbs with halogen ones, but one of them burnt instantly, so I installed the old ones back. The problem is that now the low beam is very dim, I can't see anything at night. The high beam works perfectly (high and low beam are in the same bulb). Also, when I switch to the low beam, the high beam indicator on the dash is dimly lit. Any ideas on what the problem might be?

Unplug one of the headlights and see if your indicator stays the same, then do the other. You should be able to isolate the side that has a problem by doing that. If the problem clears up you probably shorted out some of the wires in the headlight plug. I would try wiggling them around and see if that helps.

When you install a halogen bulb you can't touch it with your bare hands. Oil from your hands will get on the bulb and cause it to burn out prematurely, don't know if that is what happened to your halogen bulb or the bad wiring burnt it out.

Wiring fault somewhere, my guess is the lamp holder.

Thanks! Turns out it was a poor ground connection+a blown fuse.

  • 2001 Ford Taurus, 156k miles. Today started missing and skipping, low to no power? Idles smooth, takes off slow. Sluggish going up hill, but will go faster down hill. Push down on the gas- little change. Ck engine light is on of course. Any idea what it could be?
  • 2004 Ford ranger main headlights dim? Today i bought a 2004 Ford Ranger and i just drove it to work at night and on my way here i noticed that the headlights are dim. Every other light seems to work fine and i have been having battery issues as the truck doesn't quite want to start but it does still anyways. I just don't want to make a habit of driving with my brights and and am hoping someone will have a solution.
