2007 ford focus on a 2000 mile road trip?

I'm planning a road trip from Southwest Missouri to Upstate New York, I currently drive a 2007 Ford Focus. I recently had new tires, brakes, tension pulley, and serpentine belt put on as well as an oil change. My steering column does tend to shake when my car is going 60+ MPH but its never out of control. Will my car be reliable enough to last through the trip?

Have your wheels balanced and rotated

These items may need to be addressed before the trip: transmission fluid & filter ; spark plugs & wires ; proper air pressure in all tires, including the spare ; be sure there's a jack & lug wrench in case of a flat tire ; bring a gallon of water for the radiator

I'd like to know what was wrong with the steering shake and get that fixed before setting off for 40 odd hours of driving. Especially if most of it's going to be open road 60+ mph stuff. Wheel alignment, bent wheel, lost a wheel weight etc?

Other than that, if the car has no obvious problems, then there's no reason to think it's going to break down in the next 40 hours of use. Open road cruising with a warmed up engine is probably the easiest use for any vehicle. It's more likely to let got in stop start traffic around town, which causes more wear and stress. Cruising along at a steady 60 mph is like a holiday.

I had the same issue, my steering wheel would shake at higher speeds. I had my tires balanced and turns out my rim was bent. But they still balanced them put some weights on them and the vibrations are gone. I would have your front tires checked, cost about 9$ per tire.

It really all depends how good the engine is and also how many miles if your under around 100k to 150k miles on the odometer then you honestly should be fine ford focus are really reliable cars as long as there no beat up or have a whole bunch of miles witch it then starts to poop out the shaking probably means you need a re alignment or for your tired to be rotated but if you just got new tires you might need the alignment but it could also be other things but those are the most common hope this helps answer your question you could always take it to a mechanic for a "check up" and ask if it still is reliable

You should make your steering problem a priority… If its not wheel balance then its either worn track rod ends or anti roll roll rubbers. But don't ignore it

Without x-ray specs and a crystal ball no one is ever going to be able to confirm that it is OK.
That steering shake is going to get very tedious over 2000 miles and the vibration may cause further problems that do not exist yet.
Has it been serviced in accordance with Fords schedule too (americans call it a "tune up" but it is not). If not then anything could fail soon.

A long trip at more or less constant speeds is going to cause far less wear than short-range stopping and starting. However, get your "shake" seen to first, it's probably simply wheel balance. Check your tires, oil and coolant whenever you stop for a break.

Of course you don't disclose how many miles are on the car, so it is anyone's guess. Has the timing belt been replaced?

The wheels and tires need to be balanced.

  • My 2000 Ford Taurus won't shift into fourth gear is it ok on a 700 mile round trip drive? I have a 2000 ford Taurus and it doesn't shift into fourth gear anymore. Its been that way for 2 years. It runs fine just doesn't shift into fourth gear and the transmission light does come on after a while of driving it. I was wondering if it would be ok to take it on a 700 mile round trip drive? I know its not good for it I just need to know if I'm going to be stranded on the highway somewhere because my trans went out.
