Which car is better is pretty subjective and a matter of opinion to say nothing of ones own personal needs in a vehicle. Have you looked up the ratings via Consumer Reports? Based on past reputation, I'm inclined to give the nod to the Volvo in terms of overall safety. I personally like the look of the Ford a bit better than I do the Volvo.
The Ford has more power, but the Volvo gets a bit better fuel mileage. I value HP over fuel mileage however so I'd again be inclined to go with the Ford Flex with the largest engine offered. I've owned a Volvo in the past and if this is going to be a long term car for you, be aware that parts prices are surprisingly expensive. Not so much with the Ford.
So, which is better depends on what's important to you. The Volvo will probably last longer and most likely has better build quality but the Ford has more power and to me is quite interesting looking.
