Buy a Better Spec Older Car? Or Average Newer Car?

I currently drive a 2011 3 Door Ford Fiesta mk7, I have a baby due soon and as such this car will not be very practical

I have found a 2007 5 door Alfa Romeo 159 with 23,000 on the clock for £6500 but for around this money I could get a 1 or 2 year old Cheverolet Cruze/Vauxhall/Peugeot for example.

My question is; would it be a wise choice buying a 7 year old car that is much better than the others, in my opinion, or should I purchase something newer for around the same cost?

Well, doubtful you will have much time to work on it, newer would probably be better.

"would it be a wise choice buying a 7 year old car that is much better than the others".

How do you define "better"?

All else being equal ( it's a simplified statement, I know… ), a newer vehicle should give you less trouble than an older one.

I would go with the newer cars. Alfa doesn't have a sterling reputation for quality. Big improvements have been made in the last 5 years, you would benefit from those with a newer car.

  • Why would people buy older foreign cars instead of brand new American cars? I see it all the time, people driving 7-8 year old Mercedes or BMWs that they paid probably paid around $20,000. They could of easily gone out and bought a brand new Ford or Dodge, but they didn't. They bought a Mercedes with over 100k miles. All worn and torn on the inside. But aslong as they're shining on the outside I guess.
  • Should I buy a 1977-1979 or a newer model 2010+ Ford truck? I'm looking into getting another truck. For some reason my gut is telling me to get an older carbureted truck. Nothing beats the feeling of driving an old American 4x4 truck. But newer trucks are safer and get better mpg. Looking for some input on this decision.
  • Why would people buy a Toyota Hilux when they can buy a better, superior Ford Ranger? I owned a 2010 Toyota Camry and it broke down in 2011 upon reaching 0.6k miles. I treated it like a baby and it failed and disappointed me. My friend also owned a 2008 Toyota Tacoma and it failed to start in 2009 upon reaching 8k miles. And the mechanic said it was impossible to fix. However, my uncle has a 1965 Ford Falcon with over 750k miles on its clock and it still runs like new and he never even changed its oil since he bought it.
  • Why would people buy a Toyota Hilux when they can buy a better, Chevrolet Colorado? Or even better and superior, Ford Ranger. My cousin is going to buy a pick-up truck next month and it would be a Toyota Hilux. How do I convince him that the Hilux is not reliable?
