Is it normal to smell raw gas all day after filling up at a station?
I have a 1995 Ford F-150 (5.0) pickup. I've been noticing these past several months that every time I get gas, I can smell a strong gas odor around the outside of my truck. Not constant, just off and on. It's not coming inside the cab, just outside.
Can gas still smell several months after a tank overflows? Because several months ago, I overfilled the tank and gas was pouring out underneath. Ever since then, I only fill my tanks to the 3/4 mark (if I wrote that right). And it hasn't happened anymore. I haven't noticed any gas dripping on the ground. I have a brand new fuel filter.
I checked the trouble codes, and none of the codes have anything to do with fuel. Mostly smog related stuff, such as a purge cannister failure etc. Which I've been told by multiple people is nothing to worry about.
Added (1). I'm not 100% sure if it smells ONLY after filling up. It's possible it smells that way all the time. I do seem to recall smelling gas even when I haven't driven anywhere for days.
Added (2). There's already $800 of work that I need done on my truck. No way can I afford to have my tank etc. Checked. No time soon that is. My truck is taking all of my money away.
Of course it's not normal dipstick, and no, it isn't going to smell anything like fresh fuel months after an overflow. You need to do a thorough inspection or pay for one. It could potentially be a fire hazard.
Cracked tank or Leaking fuel pump or line. Gas in small amounts will dissipate fast and not poodle.
Nope, that ain't normal. It's very very not-normal, in fact. And it's definitely not because you over-filled your tank a month ago, it's something else.
Something is wrong with your vehicle, more specifically something is wrong with the fuel storage / delivery system in your vehicle. A cracked line, a leaky gasket, a hole somewhere a hole shouldn't be, or something similar. If you fueled up more than 2 hours ago and can smell raw gasoline in / near your vehicle, it means you have a fuel leak. Or it means some douche bag is pouring raw gasoline on your vehicle whenever you're not looking, but it's probably the first thing.
Clearly you have a leak somewhere. You should be able to fill the tanks completely and have no issues
Get the tank inspected.
No, you must have spilt some or there's a leak.
You flooded the charcoal canister which is probably full of raw gasoline instead of just gas fumes that it is intended to store. That's why the purge valve failed. Sounds like you know a lot of idiots if you've been told multiple times it's nothing to worry about!
Bet it's hard to start your motor when it's hot!
Hi so chances are the fuel overflow vent pipe needs to be replaced on a 22 years old truck.
What's the difference in gas and raw gas lol
take it autozone maybe they can lend a gas leak detector for a few minutes in the parking lot, maybe you'll find a old hose thats rusted and cracked or the fuel filter got clogged and its leaking out a line… Have you worked on your car or had any maintenance done in the past 3 months
just look under your truck, and follow the lines to your engine, your sure to find a minor fix or a hose that came loose.
No.
Have this checked.
You obviously have a leak.
You even described it: "gas was pouring out underneath.".
Now get it checked and repaired.
- Smell of Petrol after driving my car? After driving my car Ford Laser came home and parked in the garage and could smell petrol outside on left side of car only. Checked hoses, petrol cap etc could not see any leaks. Tightened the petrol cap went for a drive and could not smell anything after I came home. Why is this happening? Just had had a new radiator and service completed recently.
- My 1996 ford ranger will not start right away after filling up with gas? I turn the key and the starter just keeps trying to catch but engine never does. I've replaced the fuel filter, fuel lines and sensor in the fuel tank. Spark plugs and wires, alternator, timing belt, starter and battery are all less than a year old. I don't let the gas tank get below a quarter of a tank.
- Bad smell when I floor the gas pedal, 2014 ford mustang v6 with 9000km? Its been like this for awhile now but when i floor the gas pedal (from a stop or while moving) there's a bad smell coming from the exhaust, I can't smell anything from inside the car but my friends tell me when they're behind me. They say it smells like burning, however I check the oil regularly and it still has 50% life. Btw I only do this for short distance never holding it. The dealership told me just not to floor it and it won't do it. Wasn't much help.
- Strong smell of gas inside 2012 Focus? I have a 2012 Ford Focus. After driving at highway speeds (55 - 60 mph) for about 30 minutes and then stopping and turning off the engine there's a strong smell of gas inside the car. This doesn't happen for short runs around town at lower speeds. I've looked under the car and can't spot any signs of leakage. Anyone have any ideas what's going on?
