I have a 98 manual 4.2 v6 f150. The truck is in great condition and I don't want to sell it?

The engine is on it's last legs and I was wondering if it would be worth swapping the engine with a new ecoboost v8 and switching to an automatic transmission. Any advice? Preferably from people who are familiar with Fords.

The cheapest and easiest thing to do is just replace the engine. To try and put a ecoboost or automatic. Means changing the mounts, most of the trucks wiring to and including the computer. Your just going to have amess doing that. And a lot of money.

Put the same motor back in it. And most likely a new clutch assy. Plus this way all mounts and brackets fit right back on the new motor.

Hi this is simple not worth the expenditure as the modern engine has a much more up to date engine management system.

1. There's no ecoboost V8

2. The cost of the swap to an Ecoboost V6 and an automatic would cost about the same as going out and buying a new truck.

3. A far cheaper option would be to replace the engine with another 3.8L or 4.2L (the 4.2Lis just a stroked 3.8L) or a do a 302 (Windsor) swap, which is pretty straight forwards in this case.

YIKES… Another person that doesn't realize the cost! Trade it in and buy another vehicle.

Ford still makes replacement drive train components. I would keep it stock. That is a good truck to have, the new engines and automatic transmissions got their issues. Your 4.2L 5 speed is a rare gem.
