Can i Use a Ford 3.8 Engine to replace an existing Ford 4.2 Engine in an 1997 F150?
I have a 1997 Ford F-150 with a 4.2 V6 Engine in it. The Bottom Part of the Engine has Failed. This is a Rare and Expensive Salvage Engine to buy ($850), I want to know if i can use a $400 3.8L V6 Engine, Bottom end Block Pistons ETC. And mount the existing 4.2 Heads to it.
You can, but you're going to down a good 40 lb/ft of torque. And you would have to use a 3.8L out of a 1999-2004 Mustang as the, other split port 3.8L's were used in front wheel drive applications. You won't want to use a single port 3.8L (these are by far the most common kind)
The 4.2L isn't rare though. They aren't as common as the 3.8L but you shouldn't have problems finding one.

You would have to use a block from a split port 3.8L. The 4.2L and split port 3.8L have the same heads. The single port 3.8L has some incompatibilities with the split port 3.8L and 4.2L
