What transmission do I have in my 03 Ford explorer?
Hi! I have a 2003 Ford explorer 4dr 2wd with a 4.0 motor auto trans… I have reason to believe the overdrive has gone out on it and I'm trying to find out what I need here. The door tag say "TR/V" and from what I look up that's the 5r55s. When I look it up just from the year it says I can only have the 5r55w from the year. I'm confused and need to figure out what I have so I can get another one to put in it
When in doubt read the tag on the transmission.
Just go to your local auto recycler. They have all the info needed and have a nation wide link to locate the tranny you need.
The only automatic offered was the 5R55. If you have the ability to shift the transmission manually you have the 5R55S. If you don't have manual shift function you have the 5R55W. Most Explorers of that vintage will have the 5R55W.
Call Ford. Be ready with the VIN. If you are doing it yourself, that is good. If you have to pay a mechanic, junk the vehicle.

- My transmission has failed due to a recalled part does Ford have to replace the whole transmission or just the recalled part? I have a 2005 Ford Freestar minivan one night when I was driving home the transmission went out on it while I was on the highway. After doing some research we found that the torque converter is a recalled part on this model. If the torque converter is the reason for the transmission failure does Ford have to replace my whole transmission as well or just the torque converter?

Both of the cars come in manual transmission! Is it possible to get it in automatic transmission instead? Can I just ask the dealer (dealership) to give me the car with automatic transmission or do I have to change it myself?
