What's the most I can get for my 1996 Ford Explorer?

I have a 1996 Ford Explorer in which I Love, but now is just standing there because it needs some repairs to the Motor and perhaps the Transmission, it still goes back and forth although it still goes back and forth it takes a few seconds to go reverse. The interior is like new considering the years the car has, A.C, radio, Power windows still works. The mileage went around, it restarted when we were coming back from a 16 hours road trip. I live in Miami Fl and people here seem to want junk car pretty much for free, they only want to offer tops 300 dollars, but I think they can do much better than that, what do you think can they?

If you get an offer of $300, take it. You're not going to get more than that for a 22 year old car that needs repairs.

I though this line was pretty funny The interior is like new considering the years the car has"

Sorry, but the term "like new" means what it means. The interior is either like new, or its not. There's no such thing as grades of "like new" based on age. The interior might be in very good condition for its age - meaning it looks more like a 10 year old car than a 20+ year old car, but its most certainly NOT in "like new" condition.

That just shows that you're way over-estimating the value and qualify which probably carries over into all the other aspects of the vehicle.

Lets review the facts:
1. The car is over 20 years old

2. The odometer is a big unknown because it's rolled over, so people don't know for sure if its 100K+, 200k+, or even 300k+

3. Then engine and transmission both show signs of eminent failure

4. So basically you have a vehicle in poor condition which is capable of transporting 4 people and a modest amount of cargo. Its not a big heavy duty truck or a full size SUV or an 8 passenger vehicle or anything else special. Its just A to B transpiration for 1-4 people and a few bags. Sure it rides a little higher because its shaped like an SUV, but it doesn't do anything that you couldn't do with a Toyota Carola or Honda Civic.

5. It probably gets very poor gas mileage. Its age plus the fact that engine technology has advanced so much means you're probably getting 15-17 mpg or less. For anyone who drives more than a few miles per day, it would actually be cheaper to make payments on a newer, more efficient car and save the difference at the gas pump. Again, if it was a full size truck or something then maybe someone would tolerate the age and fuel economy but its not.

The bottom line is that its worth whatever someone will pay. If people are offering $300 then that's what its worth. Maybe if you hold out, you can get $500, but is it really worth your time to deal with flakes and showing the car to people who want to wheel & deal for months on end while you wait for someone to come along and pay $200 more? I say no, but its your time not mine so its really up to you.

1. No mention of trim level or if it's 4 door or 2 door
2. No mention of whether it's 2WD or 4WD or if it's a V6 or V8
3. No mention of mileage or even an estimate
4. It's common for even 20+ year old cars to have A/C and power windows/locks
5. It might need a transmission rebuild.

Assuming it has average mileage for the age and it's a V6 with 4WD/AWD it's worth about $2000. However, if it needs work, and there's a fair chance that it does since the transmission isn't shifting like it should you have to deduct the repair costs from that figure. A transmission rebuild will cost at least $1900 probably closer to $2500 in Miami. If it needs a rebuild, the vehicle is basically worth scrap value, which would indeed be around $300. Explorers of this vintage aren't exactly rare or anything, it's not something that someone would go out of their way to obtain. There's probably 3 or 4 dozen of these things for sale on any given day withing 20 mile radius of where you live.

A 1996 Ford Exploder that needs a transmission and probably much more isn't worth very much.

It's worth under $1000, so take whatever you can get. If you're lucky you might get $500 as a trade-in.

It does not run. $300 is a very good price.
