Is a 2000/2001 ford explorer with 250,000 miles on it bad?

Looking at a ford explorer honestly know absolutely nothing about it other than it has at least 250,000 miles on it supposedly highway and interior is a bit messed up. I haven't seen it yet but my boyfriend agreed that we wanted it already. We have kids and wanna make sure we will actually get some use out of it and it is worth paying $1000

That is half the miles of what I'm driving personally. Not bad by itself.

Ford Crown Victoria police cars (some of the same components) regularly go half a million miles with a regular fleet maintenance program.
Engine should last 400,000 miles or more IF it was maintained properly. Considering that the scrap metal value is probably $250. And the wheel rims are worth $50. Each there's little downside risk at $1000.
If it runs and passes the smog test and mechanical safety test I would say yes. Assume it will need regular ongoing maintenance work.

That's high mileage, but that probably means it was mostly freeway miles. For $1000 for a car that starts, drives, turns & stops its hard to go wrong. Its probably worth $500 at the scrap yard, so even if it dies in 2 months you'd only be out $500 which would be cheaper than 2 payments on a new car.

I got my first truck off my grandpa $500 it had like 97k on it, it was a 86 s10 5 speed 2wd. I had it roughly 7 years and had probably 250000. In that time I had replaced the clutch, transmission, starter, alternator, oil pump, partial rebuild on the engine, water pump, lifters, brakes, and rebuilt the throttle body. Yea you'd probably get use out of it but the question is how much before your done with it.
