4x4 shouldn't be always on, and I'd keep the car in front drive mode only, unless you really need 4x4, like on snow or high terrain. I don't know what the "auto" mode does, but it can't be anything good.

I bet its in the owners manual.

READ the owner's manual that came with the car. It will tell you all about the 4x4 controls and how to use them.
