I think someone tried to steal my car?

So I'm 18, I do have my license and a job and yes I do earn my own money. So I went to the mall to do some Christmas shopping. I was there about 4 hours from around 9:30 am to almost 1pm. When I went to my car, I noticed that the back window of the trunk was unlocked an opened. I know for a fact I didn't accidentally leave it open because if it was opened it would have shown on my dashboard. It's a Ford Explorer. Then I saw a card on my windshield that said Killer Christmas so I took a closer look and realized it was movie ad. So I went home. Most malls have security cameras in the parking lot right? Is there a way that I can let the mall know? Should I go back? Who would I tell? Should I call the police?

You can call the mall security but since no one stole your car it probably won't matter. But if someone else's car was stolen letting them know might be helpful.

Yes, call the police to report attempted break-in. They will decide whether to pursue the matter and view the video. If you wait too long it won't help.

Mall Security MIGHT be interested. The Police will not be interested. They don't take "what if" reports.

"What if" you left it unlocked isn't terribly convincing.

Yes i would figure out what happened

Call mall security.

The only way you can prove a crime was committed is if you have video evidence or a witness.

This is the time of year that Grinchy thieves are on the loose, looking for most anything not nailed down. If nothing was damaged and no crime was committed, the cops and mall security are not gonna be too worked up. In future, remember to lock your vehicle; all doors and windows. If you have packages in the car, keep an old blanket or beach towel in the back, so you can cover the packages and keep anything tempting out of sight. If you have an alarm system use it, although they are NOT foolproof.

Well I think you still should review the camera footage and let the police know. I don't think they would do anything for you if there was no damage but you deserve the right to know what they did to your car; you don't want to always wonder about it.
