I need some professional wisdom on my car?
I have a 1998 Ford Explorer Sport that I bought back in April. Recently, it has started acting up in terms of the coolant system. For now, we put water in the vehicle because it uses it quickly. A simple trip to work and the water disappears. Sometimes, the temperature gauge will move to hot, but nothing happens. Once I pulled over, and got under the hood and it was still cold. But sometimes I go under the hood and IG is warm, but the gauge says nothing.
It sounds as though you have a leak somewhere in the system. That is really the only reason that fluid would be needing to be added. You should not be using regular tap water in the radiator. It should be a combination of distilled water and anti freeze. A 50/50 mix is generally recommended. Regular tap water contains minerals that can clog the openings in the radiator which a very small, causing improper flow of coolant and eventual failure of the entire system.
My wisdom says it's time to dump it and move on.
The heads are cracked, not worth repairing. Sell it for scrap or parts.
