How much does it cost to replace motor rear main seal on 1997 ford explorer xlt?

The undercarriage is covered with oil concentrated mostly in front but does cover all way to back underneath. Trying to decide if it's worth cost to fix or scrap/trade possible and buy new car instead. No other problems with vehicle. I understand price will most likely be more at garage due to fact of the oil mess.

While they would have to remove the driveline and transmission its doubtful the engine itself would have to be removed. Regardless, the job would require several hours labor along with the parts necessary and wouldn't be cheap. That's a good time to replace components such as universals and clutch assemblies (if its a manual tranny). Points to consider before you spend that much on a '97 model are the mileage and overall condition. You can find a local estimate on the job at www.autoMD.com. Labor rates vary considerably so its hard to say what they might be not knowing where you're located.

I'm sure they can wash if for $50 if you can't. Rear main means R&R engine, at least $1000-1500

Amber. Your name is written as Amber and not "amber." In proper English grammar all names are capitalized no matter how many trillions of times per day that teens do otherwise. Ford. The same rule applies. Explorer. The same rule applies. XLT. The same rule applies. The next rule, Ms. Amber, is that to ask about cost of repairs online is rather foolish and impossible. How is anyone going to know what exactly is the condition of this vehicle and what other work, parts, labor charges, fees, etc, is a shop going to charge? The issue is your addiction to texting and the Internet. It is so easy to grab the device and post a text here that the brain thinks this is OK. It is not. Cars are repaired locally by a mechanic who determines what needs to be done and can happily provide an estimate free of charge. No cost. Go find a local mechanic. And, please, edit and correct the proper name issue I have identified.
