How do you replace the passenger side upstream 02 sensor from under this vehicle?

2000 Ford Explorer 5.0 V8

I have had my (4) 02 sensors replaced about 3-4 yrs ago and I stood beside the vehicle while the mechanic replaced them 1 by 1. He handed me the old one and I handed him the new one. After he was done the vehicle threw a CEL. The problem was the mechanic didn't fasten one of the connectors all the way. My question is how did he do it from under the vehicle? It is an extremely tight space under there. Most people are saying they went inside the vehicle and under the console to unhook the 02 sensor and hook it back up. Well, this mechanic didn't. He did everything from under. He also didn't take anything apart or go inside my vehicle. So obviously this mechanic knew a secret route or something. It didn't take him very long to replace them either. Maybe it will just take a while to get your hand to where you can unhook and hook it back up from under or something. Not sure. Any ideas? My guy said there was no way he could get to it from under the vehicle because of the tight space between everything. But I know you can!

Good question I haven't a clue!

I've only done the V6s on them and the connector is Underneath. They use a 22mm or 15/16" hex on all them. I have special sockets for them but you can use an open end wrench. It's a bit of a snug fit under there. On some they do go thru the floor, the new one will have Rubber Grommet on it to confirm. Get a Flashlight and get under there and look if you're curious.

Are you looking to replace the sensor again or just trying to reconnect it? One tip is to spray some silicone lubricant in the connector. This will make it much easier to press the connectors together until the retaining tab clicks into place. As for reaching the connectors, you may want to try removing the inner fender well behind the wheel closest to the sensor in question to give you access.

  • Rattling noise coming from passenger side possibly engine when going up steep hills, for ranger? I ave a 2007 ford ranger and recently when going up hills there has been a rattling noise that seems to come from the passenger side towards the engine or front of the truck. What could cause this? I also recently had an oil change, and they put 5w30 in instead of the recommended 5w20, could any of this be a cause?
  • 2008 Ford Mustang - The passenger side under the dashboard recently leaked I took it to a Firestone recently and they said I had to take it to the dealer or to Ford directly. Called Ford and they said it would be $130 just to even look at it. The dealership I bought the car from is closed for good now. Can anyone tell me if there's a way to fix this yourself rather than having it fixed? The passenger side leaks everytime it rains but it rained heavy the other day and now the carpet is flooded.

  • What is that noise coming from the passenger side of my 2014 Ford Focus st? I'm hearing a metallic rubbing sound coming from the passenger side. Almost like an air leak, but more of a light metal rubbing. But I guess it could be anything. Louder with higher acceleration. Not related to wheel speed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
