New Gerald Ford Class USN Aircraft Carrier Achilles heal?

I just read an article about our new 13 billion dollar aircraft carrier having a host of electricity based upgrades like the new "EMALS" launch system which is based on electricity instead of steam powered and the ability to generate more electricity then previous Nimitz class carriers but my question is what good is having all that if an EMP makes your 13 billion dollar aircraft carrier unable to launch aircraft and essentially turns it into the most expensive parking lot in history? Why are all of our new incredibly expensive projects ignoring the threat of an EMP yet becoming ever more dependent on electronic systems? Seems like one well placed nuke/pinch could make over 100 billion dollars of USN craft (carrier + escort vessels) virtually useless in one fell swoop why are we not addressing this potentially devastating weakness?

Two things - the aircraft carrier's vital systems are protected against EMP, rather effectively. The threat is well-known and understood and protection can and is built against it.

Second, an EMP attack is a nuclear attack, so you'd risk nuclear retaliation by trying to carry out an EMP attack (yes, you can generate EMPs with special equipment, but that requires a lot of electricity and said equipment, which you can't exactly mount into a missile). Realistically, you'd just nuke the carrier strike group if you were going to go that route.

So, no, an EMP is not really a threat. Don't you think in 50 years of Cold War and the last 70 years nukes have been around we might have thought of ways to EMP harden electronics Captain Obvious? You seem to have forgot, the same emp would ground all the jets China a and Russia can easily sing an aircraft carrier. Othe4r evil and tyrannical groups will likely be able to accomplish that also.
That is why China is destroying environments and coral reefs in the South China Sea to build military bases where they can't be sunk. China is the Worst at destroying the environment but they are Smart about how to run a dominating military.
Sinking huge carriers will kill over 5000 good military men and cost Billions of Dollars, plus give a Boost to the bloated egos of our tyrannical enemies. Building huge carriers is just Stupid in this era of military technology. Mainly because shielding against EMP is incredibly simple, and everything in the military's arsenal is EMP shielded. Even a simple homemade Faraday cage make out of scrap wiring can completely shield anything against an EMP. It's not like in the movies you know… And the method of generating an EMP is a nuclear blast. If you're close enough to be affected by the EMP the nuclear blast and radiation is MUCH more of a concern than any over-hyped EMP. You can't fire laser weapons with steam.

  • Why do a lot of Class A gas RV's have a steering wheel that says Ford on them? I know a lot of Class C RV's are on a Ford Chassis, but why do a lot of Class A (flat nose) gas RV's have a steering wheel that says "Ford" on it like the one in the photo?
  • Which Class A RV is more commonly rented? A) Diesel (on a Freightliner, Roadmaster, or Spartan Chassis) b) Gas (on a Ford F53 chassis) c) both A and B d) none of the above When you answer, can you give me an explanation?
  • What is my class in the social hierarchy? I'm 18 and I live with my parents. We live in a very rich town where the norm is to have a BMW or a range rover. However, my family has a Honda and 2 ford's (my parents do not like showy cars). They pay about $3,400 for our house rent. We also do a lot of shopping and spend at least $200 every shopping trip (maybe once a week). We vacation 2 times a year and we roadtrip maybe 4 times a year. From your point of view what do we sound like to you? Lower, middle, or upper?
  • Should the United States Navy have invest in some smaller aircraft carriers instead of Ford and Nimitz class supercarriers ships? Maybe have 5 Ford and 5 Nimitz supercarriers and 10 or so smaller as the French Charles de Gualle or a World War 2 size carrier with a few planes because losing a supercarrier would be a big blow to the US military morale and cost production. Since China and Russia has the S -400 and supersonic missles long range and maybe by the year mid 2040's or so aircraft carriers would possibly be semi outdated and a use of fast large hovercraft and stealth weapons could be the next tech or so
