My drain plug is stuck in the oil pan and it is made of aluminum what can I do to get it unstuck?
Car is a 2000 Ford escort with an aluminum oil pan, now the drain plug is completely rounded and can't move it even with vice grips. I hear that the pan will crack if we torque it too hard, should we heat up the bolt and then try the vice grips on it?
Heat will weaken the pan. Vice grips can do it. I have done far too many oil changes in my life and you might be surprised at what we find in a shop in that situation. A 6 point socket can do the trick also.
Purchase a set of sockets made especially for the purpose of removing a bolt that has been rounded off. There are many brands on the market and they work perfectly. I have a set of Irwin Bolt Extractor in Metric that I have used many times. They have never failed to remove the bolt.

A better tool that vice grips would be a pipe wrench that works even on a smooth surface of a pipe. But make sure you are turning in the right direction which should be lefty loosey or counter clockwise.
First, anyone that uses plires on a drain plug,… Or tightens them beyond tight ought to have a good wrap on the knuckles with a wrench.
You got nothing to loose, if you go at it with vice-grips., then you can get a new plug,… If you get it out
say NO to heat,… You got a pan ful of oil, and lots of chances for fire… Probably can't get it heated up anyway
Use a pipe wrench. If you would have used the proper size in the first place it wouldn't have rounded off. Go buy a new plug. Put your purse down and pull it out

- Does the oil pan have to be removed to change the rear main seal on a ford 3.0L V6 in a 2000 ford ranger? I have the engine removed from the truck and was swaping in a salvaged engine that all checks out good except for a slight leaking rear main seal. So, after inspecting the rear main seal, it appears as though a could just slide it out and a new one in. Does the oil pan need to be removed? Or can I just carefully remove the old seal and clean the surfaces good and install a new one?
