How would you get a engine to TDC after a belt snap on a 1.6 zetec?

On my old Ford Escort zetec, the belt snapped and i just scrapped it but it does bring the question, I know how to get the bottom part of the engine to TDC that's simple enough but how would you get the Cam shafts to TDC?

First of all you turn the "bottom part of the engine" so that it is not at TDC because you don't want the valves to hit the pistons when you're turning the cam(s) to get them to the right spot.
The cam(s) will have index marks or a keyway that you use to locate them but you start by knowing that all the valves on the #1 cylinder will be closed when the #1 piston is at TDC after the compression stroke - this may be defined by ignition components that are mechanically tied to the crankshaft.
After you have the cams (and valves) in the correct position you carefully turn the crankshaft into TDC position while making sure you go in the correct direction so as not to damage the valves.
All of this is assuming you're re-timing an engine that didn't bend the valves when the belt broke.

Turn the camshaft with a wrench and position the crankshaft to avoid bending valves while you do this. At crank TDC, the cam should line up its timing marks while both valves of cylinder No. 1 are closed. Find one at the junkyard and study it. The next guy might appreciate you having removed the cylinder head for him after you look in the cylinders to understand that part of the engine. Maybe you still have the old engine to study and see the extent of the damage.
