Car won't start due to bad thermostat?

I have a 99 Ford Escort(ZX2)
Last Wednesday I noticed the heat was coming out on my car, I disregarded it because it's spring.
Then while I'm driving Friday, I smelled something strange(may have been from the radiator) like overheating. A few miles later the car just stalls and shuts off. I waited about 5-10 minutes and started it up again and began smoking about a mile up the road. Luckily an officer helped me into a parking lot. I was also able to get it home, but I can start the car and it run for maybe 5-10 minutes then it'll stall again. The reason I think it's the thermostat is because just a few days before I tried the heat and it wasn't working, then a few days later it overheats and begins to stall. I don't want to flood the engine either. Can ANYONE give me any advice to what they think it may be?

Overheating can shorten the life of the coolant tempature sensor. The sensor senses the tempature of the water in the engine. If it cool it will send a signal o the ECM to spray more fuel into the cylinders or less when it is hot. Faulty sensor can affect the starting.

#1 - Radiators don't over heat… Engines to to lack of cooling thru the radiator.
#2 - Continue to start the car without adequate cooling will destroy the engine.
#3 - Ignoring new things (heat when you did not have it before) or smoke is a bad sign.
#4 - Going out and restarting the car every couple days will not fix it.
#54 - I bet you have no coolant in the coolant tank… So you should fill it with water (don'rt wast $ on anti-freeze because it may be too late) , and see home much it takes… Once the tank and radiator are full, try to start the car again, and look for leaks or "steam". You probably have a leak externally (rad, cooling hoses) or internal (head gasket). If it's hoses or Rad that should have been fixable, if it's the head gasket you are done with the car.

  • Why did my car start and die when put into gear? Now it won't start at all? It's a cold winter day (below zero) Car started right up! I let it run for about 2 minutes, I put it in gear and it just died. I figured it's cold out, not real surprising, but when I tried to start it again, it won't start! Turns over fine but engie won't start! Any ideas? 2003 Ford Taurus 3.0L
  • Can a bad thermostat in a car cause the tempature guage in the dash to not work? Or is the guage itself broke? I have a 1991 Ford ranger and have no idea if the engine is overheating because the gauge doesn't work. Thermostat or gauge? Of its the gauge do I have to replace the whole cluster?
  • Car won't start even with jump start? I have a Ford Escort 2001. I checked the battery at Auto Zone, told me it was fine and had charge. The alternator is also good. The starter is also fine. When I turn the key there's no clicks. The lights on the dashboard stay on. Does anyone know what it could be? I've also checked the cables and connections.
  • 2003 Ford F-250 Powerstroke won't Crank, won't start? When I turn the key, I get a rapid clicking noise, and the indicator lights on the dash flicker. Glow plugs also sound like their barely getting enough juice. No crank at all. I hooked up my 100w solar panel with a automatic12/24 volt charge controller, which said batteries had a good charge. Went ahead and charged them fully, followed by cleaning the post, and battery connections of corrosion. Result was the same, won't start. Any ideas what could be wrong?
