Can I rig a tailpipe, or do I NEED a new muffler?

95 Ford Escort LX; I want to fix the tailpipe (which fell off) because it's extremely loud without it. The transmission is going though, so I want to put as little money into it as possible. The car was free.

Can I buy a tailpipe that clamps on? Is a muffler/tailpipe combo expensive? I know there's a matching Escort at a U-Pull Lot, but I don't think you're allowed to use cutting tools (and the internet has said that likely the muffler connecting piece will be rusted together).

Suggestions? Can I rig a tailpipe, or do I NEED a new muffler - 1

You can't add just a tailpipe to that. You need a muffler (at least) anyhow. Your car will not pass inspection and is frankly not safe with the exhaust system in that shape. Muffler work is not expensive. If you can't afford a minor repair, you can't afford to own a car or afford to drive. Remember that there's no economy in failing to keep your car in a safe operating condition. If you feel like other problems are going to kill this car soon, it may make sense to let this one go now rather than putting money into it.

You'll have to excuse me for being confused. I was under the impression that what fell off was a pipe, so I just wanted to know if one thing, or both things, need replacing. I can afford repairs, but I prefer to put in the effort to learn how to do it myself. I replaced a window for $27, I don't mind taking a stab at the tail pipe / muffler. My question was not an invitation for opinions on whether or not I can own a car.

On a 21 year old car, If it is extremely loud then the problem is not just the tail pipe falling off. That would have almost no effect on the sound. It is loud because the muffler is burnt out. You need to replace both muffler and tailpipe which will be one piece. Here is one for $44. http://www.theautopartsshop.com/exhaust-muffler/wal18322.html Check with local parts stores in your area.

  • Why is my car smoking from tailpipe? I have an 06 ford crown victoria and the car has been sitting for about a month without a computer and of course without being started. I put the computer on and started it up and it was awful. Sounded horrible doing nothing but missing idling rough and low. Smells like gas real bad and my gas mileage is horrible and car blows a blueish kinda smoke. I don't know where to go from here. Any help appreciated!
  • What muffler should I put on my GMC Yukon? I have a 2003 GMC yukon with the 4.8L. I want something deep and throaty and noticeable, but not too extreme because it is a daily driver and I would like to keep it somewhat classy, plus I like to hear the radio and people talking. I've had only Flowmasters on past vehicles, I've had the 40, 44 and 10s in the past but always on Ford engines. Any suggestions? Don't have to be flowmasters by the way
  • Can a Flowmaster 44 Muffler work on a 2003 Ford ranger V6 3.0 Engine? I have been wanting to put a loud exhaust on my truck for a while now and i took it to a local muffler shop and they recommended i use another muffler because the Flowmaster super 44 won't work well on my truck. But i have seen some youtube videos that show other results should i use the Flowmaster super 44 Muffler?
  • What kind of muffler should I get? So I recently got a 95 ford mustang and I'm looking into putting a new muffler on it. Actually I'm. I want it to sound more beastly and mean. I'm either putting a flow master 40 series or 44 super series. Also it's a 3.8L v6. Out of those two what one should I get? I don't want to add new pipes. Later on I might add a cat back but I don't know.
