03 Ford Escort ZX2 won't turn over?

For the last week or so it was taking an extra second to turn over and would occasionally die when put in revers. Today it died, started again, sat for 6 hours, started then died five miles down the road. All the dash lights come on and it sounds like it wants to start but it doesn't turn over. The alternator and the battery were replaced last year.

Added (1). It has half a tank of gas and it didn't sound like the fuel pump was priming.

Has it got any fuel in it? Can you hear the fuel pump prime up when you first turn the key on?

Hi so here we have a now 13 year old car. Have i got that right. So as cars over 10 years old especially need lots of tender loving care and lots of spare parts. As over time things wear out so now you have replaced the usual suspects now it starts to really get expensive. So yes when you do things your self and know your car it becomes easy to save money. So this might now be when it gets complex. The starter motor wok be the next place to look along with other items intros chain starter motor solenoid. And ignition switch. These might prove a bit more difficult to diagnose without knowledge hence the expense with a auto electrician or a mechanic.
