Why did the change oil light just come on in my car after an oil change?

We have a 2016 Ford Escape and we just had the oil changed about 1000 miles ago at a Fox Ford near us. The oil light was not on when we went there and was not on after we left. It just came on now with a message saying that the oil needed to be changed. So what is causing this? I know the light doesn't need to be reset because it was not on before the oil change or afterwards until now.

They either forgot to reset the mileage indicator on the oil light or they didn't put your filter in properly and the oil is leaking out. At the very least, check your oil level immediately to save yourself a ton of money.

I'm not certain about your vehicle but in the past, the light indicated that the oil level was low not that you were due to have the oil changed. Have you checked the oil level? If not you definitely should If it is at the proper level take the car back where you got the oil changed and have the determine why it has come on. Be aware that your oil pan is made of aluminum and they may have over tightened the drain bolt stripping the threads and causing a leak. If that is the case an insert will need to be installed to accommodate a different sized drain plug. Sometimes those guys will even use an impact wrench to tighten the drain plug. If they did they almost certainly stripped out the threads in the drain hole.

Didn't reset timer most likely if oil level is ok.

Step one, dip your oil if low top it up.
Then take it back to whoever did the oil change and ask them WHY the level was low. (keep receipt for new oil and film yourself topping it up as evidence)
If the oil level is where it should be, take it back to where you had the oil change and ask them why they didn't reset the counter.

Because they did not reset the system, read the owner manual it will tell you how to reset the system. My Jeep does that too!
