If you own a vehicle, then knowing how to fix a car CD player is important knowledge to have. If you own your car for a long time, you will likely be faced with the task of fixing or replacing the player in your car at some point.

The Basics of How to Fix a Car CD Player
Just because a car CD player is electronic doesn't mean that you should be afraid to open it up and attempt to do your own repairs. Many people assume that a CD player is a complicated electronic device, but that couldn't be further from the truth. The player is actually made up of just a few mechanical parts that can break, and repairing those parts is sometimes surprisingly simple.

Simple Troubleshooting
Before you decide to open up the player and attempt more invasive repairs, try some of these more basic troubleshooting tips to figure out how to fix a car CD player:

Is the problem related to the volume or quality of the sound? This could be related to the speakers and not the main unit of your audio system. Take the time to remove the covers from the speakers in your car and make sure there's no trapped dirt or damage. Also check the electrical connections on the back to make sure they are still firm and make a good connection.
If the speakers look fine, another issue that could affect sound is the quality of the connections behind the head unit of your system. You'll need to open the dash to access the unit (see your owner's manual or an auto repair manual for your car). Make sure all channel (speaker) connections are solid and make good contact.
When you insert a disc, is the CD display blank? While it sounds simple, one of the most common mistakes people make is inserting a CD upside down. This will cause the player to act as though it isn't working.
Is the music skipping or stopping completely? This is commonly caused by dirty or damaged tracks on the disc. Before assuming that the problem is with the player, test a few newer CDs and see if the skipping behavior continues. If it doesn't, the the problem is the disc and you'll need to look into cleaning or repairing the disc so that it can play normally again.
If you've explored all of the possibilities listed above and you're still having difficulty, you may need to explore how to fix a car CD player using a more advanced approach.

You buy a new one that's not broken yet.

Be 100% sure another CD is not jammed inside. If not, it's not worth fixing. Replace it.

You can remove it, take it apart, and see IF you can see anything, but the odds of finding anything are small. Better to get a factory replacement from ebay. Look on the top on the unit after you have removed it from the car - On Fords, there will be TWO different part numbers. One part number is just the 'bare' player, while the other part number is the player WITH whatever mounting brackets needed for your car. Look up each part number on ebay & see what you can find. IF the attaching brackets aren't too complicated, you can by a 'new' bare player and re-use the brackets from your car. 'Usually' the 'bare' player will be easier to find, as it could fit several different cars.

CD players are totally outdated now unfortunately. I would say try to rely on your phone for music.

By getting a touchscreen Bluetooth player.

Hit it with a hammer!

  • Why won't the high beams work on my car? I just bought a 2012 ford mustang and everything works perfectly except for the high beams. Low beams, parking lights, turn signals, fog lights all work. The person I bought the car from did have EMT lights put in and removed them before selling me the car. Is it possible he messed something up when removing the EMT lights? If not what could the problem be?
  • Help me fix my 2008 Ford fusion cd player? I have cds in my car cd player(yes, I still use cds). However, when I try to turn it on, it says no disc. I can't eject or anything. I would like for it to work. As I said, it is a 2008 For fusion. Does anyone have a clue how to fix this?
  • Car Made A Grinding Noise, Won't Work? I drive a 2005 Ford Focus. When I got in my car and turned the ignition, it made a loud screeching noise. I was able to idle a little, but eventually, it stopped altogether. There's some fluid on the ground and it is below freezing out. Any ideas?
  • What's wrong with the CD player in the car? The car is a 2003 Ford Explorer XLT. It has the AM/FM CD/Casette combo. If I put a CD in, it plays just fine. When I go to remove the CD, it won't come all the way out. I can see it, it sits in the beginning of the slot. I'm not sure how to fix this. I want to keep the stock radio. You can't grab it. It has to be taken out with a pen or a paperclip.
