Get a mechanic to put car on a lift and check suspension. Test drive the car! Overall, the Escape has pretty good reliability.

That's a horrible choice. SUVs are rotten vehicles, as they are exempt from many of the safety design features that proper cars are legally required to meet.
Plus, this one is 14 years old, so it's very close to dead. Get a much younger small car, such as a Honda, or Toyota.
