Ford Escape stumbling while braking and battery light related?

Thanks in advance. I have a 2004 Ford Escape and recently the battery warning light has been flickering on and off. I didn't think much of it until today when it started badly stumbling whenever I brake too hard. The RPMs bottom out and it almost turns off, but doesn't. It doesn't always do this and the light isn't always on, but it's pretty often. Does this seem related? I ask because I recently had to replace all 6 spark plugs and it was stumbling badly before that. It drove great for about 2 weeks before this started so I don't know if its more likely to be related to that, or this new battery issue.

Mine was doing that. Are batt post and cables clean, batt have 12 volts? Mine it turned out to be the alternator.
Auto Zone can test both for you.
Pray that it's not the alt. $170
You can take it out by removing the halfshaft. It can come out the top after removing ECM & wiring harness. Or drop the pass side subframe. Yeah, it's as hard as it sounds.

It might be "stumbling" and almost stalling because there isn't enough battery power to keep the spark plugs firing smoothly. The cause might be either a loose wire on the alternator, or a failing alternator that is intermittent and not keeping the battery properly charged. Braking hard shouldn't have anything to do with it unless perhaps the battery isn't properly bolted down and the battery cables are loose. If it also runs rough and tries to stall with the headlights on (especially high beam), I'd suspect an alternator issue.

I suggest that you take it Take it to any auto parts store such as O'Reilly, Pep Boys, Western Auto, NAPA, etc and ask them to test your battery and charging system. The test is free and that would at least be a start at solving the issue.

Alternator is bad. Time to take to shop and replace. And if you doing that replace the belt as well. Better safe than sorry.

Your battery is weak and may not be charging as you drive. Check the charging system fuse. Change it if it's blown. That should make a mighty improvement, but still have the battery checked.

Hi so what you expect from a 14 years old truck might be a lot to do with it.

  • What causes vibration and skidding tires while braking? I have a 1997 ford aerostar, and it runs beautifully. The only issue is the brakes. I had the brake lines, calipers and front left wheel bearing changed. The brake pedal goes down pretty far before activating the brakes, and a lot of times if i apply a little too much pressure they don't work and i just start skidding. Also, if i'm going fast and start slowing down the van vibrates pretty violently. What could cause this, and estimate how much to repair?
  • What does a battery light and oil light that turn on a 2012 ford Fusion se mean? Yesterday I was at a stop sign and my car was on and the engine turned off and the battery and oil light came on so I turned off the car and turned it back on and it was working again so I decided to go to autozone so then I had them check the battery and they told me the battery was good and the alternator was good then they checked the car for any codes and it had 0 codes so I don't know what's wrong with my car it still runs but it shut off on me twice yesterday
  • Why does my 2000 Ford Explorer shake badly when taking a sharp right while lightly braking? Just had the front ball joints replaced (upper and lower). I took it for a test drive on a route with lots of turns. When taking the almost 90 degree turns at ~35mpg and lightly breaking (only when turning right), I felt like I had run onto a road with a bad washboard and some loose rocks. I've taken these same turns before the repair was done and no issues.
  • What does the check feul cap light mean on a 2003 Ford escape and is it safe to drive while the light is on? So this morning while I was driving my truck I noticed the check feul cap light was on. Not exactly for sure when it came on. Just wondering if it's something minor or something I should correct right away?
