2013 Ford Escape SEL passenger door will not close?

My Mom's 2013 Ford Escape's passenger door will not close. She told me that she came home from work and did not experience any problems. The next day, she told me that her door wouldn't shut. I came over to her house and every time I tried shutting it, it wouldn't close. My Dad had to tie the door shut with some rope. We just now found out that there was a recall on this car the the dealer (CARMAX) never told us about. Does anyone have any suggestions or what I should do?

Make-sure the door latch isn't already in the 'closed' position…

The door latch has most likely failed.

If the door latch was part of whatever recall you're talking about, then have the recall work done at a dealership As soon as possible and get the door fixed free of charge. If the door latch isn't part of that particular recall, then you're left to either replace the door latch yourself or pay a shop to do it.

Unfortunately, in most states anyway, sellers (even if the seller is a dealership or a Carmax etc.,) aren't legally required to make sure that any open recall work is completed prior to selling a vehicle, nor are they obligated to inform the buyer that the open recall even exists. The good news is, if the door latch was recalled your Mom won't be paying for the repair (even if finding out the way she did wasn't ideal to say the least).

I just looked, there WAS a Recall on the Latches. You can order and buy them online. You'll need to remove the inner door panel to replace it. Youtube will have a video I'm sure.
