2004 Ford Escape gas pedal issue after replacing ignition coils?

Thanks in advance for any assistance. Today I spent most of the day replacing the 6 ignition coils, spark plus, brake pads and rotors on my 2004 Ford Escape. All of the issues that I set out to fix I have fixed, but now I believe I might have created a new one. In order to access the back 3 spark plugs I have to remove the intake manifold and unhook quite a few hoses. I double checked and made sure everything was reconnected and the car ran great initially. I turn out on the main road and gunned it to get up to about 60 mph and everything seemed great. I turned down a side road to slammed on the brakes a couple of times to test them out, also. Once I pulled out on the main road again my gas pedal had basically became loose and was all the way to the floor. I could only push the pedal about an inch before it was maxed out and touching the floor. It acted normal otherwise as far as the rpm's go, but with the limited pedal even with it floored I could only slowly speed up and it took me a full minute to get it to 50 mph. I'm not sure if I'm explaining this right, but I'm hoping the idea is coming across. Once I got it home and parked it for a minute I cranked it again and the pedal had returned to normal, but I didn't want to bring it on the road again. I don't trust it to drive it to work now, and I don't know what I could have done. I checked again and all the hoses/cables seem to be in order. Any idea what could be going on?

Test drive it at a road with not too many cars. Issue comes back, troubleshoot. Did you put a new intake manifold gasket? Check for a vacuum leak with a smoke machine. Jack the car and check for sticking brakes. Check if you installed the correct coils and plugs or correct gap on plugs.

Is it a drive by wire or a mechanical linkage between the pedal & throttle butterfly? I suspect mechanical - in which case something is loose. Get someone to step on & off the gas pedal (with engine OFF) while you watch the butterfly. If it doesn't move through about 90º then look for why. If its electronic you'll need the ignition on.

Adjust the accelerator cable. Take the intake hose off of the throttle body and make sure the throttle plate closes all the way and that it opens all the way.

Hi you have the evidence in front of you the car is now some 13 years old which is twice as long as the car was meant to last. So it is now going to need spare parts all the time when you do get it running.

If you are good enough to do this job then go out and check the gas pedal cable integrity. C'mon. BTW you don't beat the car after performing repair jobs. Gunning and slamming is troll language. Not car owner lingo.

  • Bad smell when I floor the gas pedal, 2014 ford mustang v6 with 9000km? Its been like this for awhile now but when i floor the gas pedal (from a stop or while moving) there's a bad smell coming from the exhaust, I can't smell anything from inside the car but my friends tell me when they're behind me. They say it smells like burning, however I check the oil regularly and it still has 50% life. Btw I only do this for short distance never holding it. The dealership told me just not to floor it and it won't do it. Wasn't much help.

  • Why Does Replacing Idle Air Control Valve on 2002 Ford F150 not correct Idle issue? Got A check engine light. Code said Idle Air Contol Valve. Purchased A control valve at parts store. Replaced control valve with new one. Engine Idled up real high. Attempted driving, thought computer had to reset. Engine still idled up too high. Parts store said vehicle had to be driven for at least 20 miles for control valve to operate correctly. Drove truck 30 miles, engine started to surge. Put old control valve back in and engine does not idle high or surge but stalls out.( suggestions) ?
