2004 Ford Escape battery/alternator/something else?

Thanks for any assistance. I have a 2004 Escape. For a couple of months the battery light has been pretty constantly staying on, but it runs ok. I've had the battery and alternator tested and both showed good. The only issue I've had with performance is when I'm getting on the interstate and have to speed up quickly I lose most of my acceleration once I get to about 60 mph and even with my pedal to the floor I can only slowly creep faster. Yesterday it slowly lost power as I was driving and I couldn t speed up past about 40 mph. As I slowed to a stop my rpms bottomed out and almost turned off when I hit the gas again. I had to idle down my road to get home because it wouldn t accelerate. I turned my wipers on and they slowly crept, making me think I had a battery or alternator issue. I have no CEL and when I put a meter on the battery my charge went down from 12.56 to 12.19. I checked and my battery connections seemed dirty so I sanded them and cranked it up and the battery charged up to about 13.6. I thought that was my problem but I went to drive it again today and the battery light came on again and it seemed a little sluggish. I didn't bring it on the main road in fear of an issue. It charged so I don't know if it would be the alternator. I don't know what I'm dealing with here so any ideas would be good.

I can't be certain, but I would check the cables for faults.

Your volt reading should be at least 14V to 15V at the battery with the engine running, lights and accessories off. Your alternator or regulator is on it's way out, and/or bad connections.

With Fords, the problem you describe is caused by a blown charging system fuse. When you find it, replace that 5 amp fuse with a 15 amp one. Ford sold countless alternators and autolite batteries people did not need. You may need to burrow under the dash to find that fuse since they did not put it with the rest of them.

Even if the alternator was replaced it still sounds like a bad alternator. Try another one.

You're dealing with a faulty ground cable.
1. It could be old and corroded on the inside and you can't see it
2. It could be loose or the clamp itself could be breaking where it is connected to the engine or the body

  • How to give an idea for something to like Chevy or ford or something? I have an idea that I know would make a lot of money for them but I want to tell them, not anyone else about it, and should I try and patent it first?
  • Should I fix my truck or sell it and buy something else? I'm a 17 year old male and I have and old Ford F150. I really like this truck. I prefer older vehicles. The body is really rusty and the frame is weak. It needs some mechanical parts too. The gas gauge just broke too. I know a lot about this truck. I've wanted one since I was a little kid. Should I try to fix mine up? Should I sell it and try to find another one in better shape?
  • New alternator and battery but battery still won't charge in my ford explorer 93? My battery wouldnt charge So i just replaced my alternator a few days ago knowing it would fix the problem. It appears that the alternator was not the problem. I've got a brand new alternor and when i check the battery(running car), it just stays on 12.5V and doesn't go up. I tried using it yesterday and it just drained out on me. I tried 3 good batteries already and checked if they charge in my car but they don't. Oh, the alternator came with a volt regulator.
  • Alternator and battery tested good, but Ford Escape won't crank? I have a 2004 Ford Escape that has had the battery warning light on the dash for about a month. I took it to auto zone and the battery and alternator tested good. Today I'm out and it won't turn over and has no power. The battery terminals are clean and the connections look good. Any idea what might be going on here?
