How do you remove scratches from car?

I bought a Ford Edge the other day and it had a good bit of scratches on it. It's a silver car and some of the scratches are black, some are whitish/silver, and some are still silver. Some are rough feeling and others you can barely feel at all. So I'm assuming some are deeper than others. What can I buy to fix this and now do I do it? I was gonna get it fixed at a body shop but I was gonna be too expensive.

Paint

Put a cover over it when you park it up haha! No joke i can guarantee half them scratches are from cats that sit on your car in the night…

I forgot to mention, the previous owner tried to touch up spots with paint and there's a few paint streaks running down the car.

Tl;dr thanks for the 2 points loser

For me, there's a four-step process.

For very light scratches, I try some windex (to clean it) and then some normal car polish.

If that doesn't work, I try some polishing compound, which has more grit to it.

If that doesn't work, I try some rubbing compound, which has quite a bit of grit in it.

If that doesn't work or I know that the scratch is deep, I move to one of the replacement paint containers sold by the dealership, and very lightly fill in the scratch, using a bit at a time, and then after it's dry I put on a top coat and some car polish.
