Remote Start Shutting Off (2016 Ford Escape)?

I will preface my question here with the my knowledge on anything automobile is extremely limited so this could be a simple fix but before I schedule to take it into the dealer to be serviced (and likely smashed with a big bill) I wanted to ask and see if this was a simply fix…

Anyways! I have a 2016 Ford Escape… No real known issues but there's a new battery as of about six months ago. When I remote start the vehicle, it starts up like normal but then after about 15-20 seconds it just shuts down automatically and won't keep running. What gives?

I can start it up manually with the keys inside and it'll stay running just fine. I can drive it around just fine. No issues. It seems to be centered on and only on the remote start. It just won't run any longer than 15-20 seconds and I have no clue why…

Any help on this before I take it in?

Someone that knows what to look for needs to actually have access to the vehicle to diagnose this issue. Off hand, I can think of a few completely unrelated possible causes.
1. Most remote starts disengage when the brake pedal is depressed to prevent a thief from driving off without the key. If the switch on the brake pedal is defective, the starter could believe the brake is being pressed.
2. The remote starter basically replicates the function of the ignition switch. If one of the wires is loose or broken, the vehicle may not be getting power to the circuits required to keep the engine running.
3. The remote start unit itself could be going bad.
4. Some remote starters monitor the TACHOMETER to ensure the engine is actually running. If yours works that way, and isn't receiving a valid tachometer reading, it would shut off.

This is probably not even close to a complete list.

As per the owners manual you will probably have to reprogram the remote start feature.

  • Why won't my car start after shutting down on highway? My car shut down while driving on the highway. I tried to turn it back on but it won't start. It cranks but won't start. The battery is fine. The fuel pump is fine. I think the distributor cap isn't getting power. Can it be the ignition module? Its a 1994 ford tempo lx with 70k miles on it.
  • 2000 ford ranger stalling and shutting off while idling? I have a quick question, last night I ran over a deer, the truck started stalling and would not pick up speed and accelerate Like it suppose to. The muffler was hanging and the oxygen sensor cable came unplugged, could that be the issue? Or any other ideas? The bottom looks solid nothing is damaged or bent, I did plug the oxygen sensor back, but no luck

  • My truck keeps shutting off? I have a 1991 ford F-150 and sometimes when driving the truck will just shut off. It will also happen when I hit a bump. I don't want to have to get rid of the truck as it used to belong to my grandpa.
