Can I charge a 12v battery from my cars 12v plug?
I'm building a cooler stereo (cooler that has a car stereo and speakers in it) which is powered by a deep cycle battery.
The thing will spend most of it's time in the back of my car (when not in use) and there's a ciggarrette lighter socket in the back and I was wondering if I had a male to make plug, could I charge the battery in the cooler from it? The battery is actually bigger in size than the battery in my vehicle. (Ford edge)
Yes, as long as the current draw from your cooler battery doesn't exceed the capacity of the accessory power outlet. If it DOES draw too much power, you may find yourself replacing fuses.
DO NOT! Change to a larger capacity fuse. That could start a fire.
Just a word of warning, you do need to take care. Depending on how your 'aux' socket is wired- It is possible that you can have a situation where if the vehicle battery were in a low state of charge and you try to start the vehicle a large amount of current could be pulled from your leisure battery through a very small cable with possible disastrous results - So a fuse… No more than 10 amps must be used in the circuit.
If you do find the fuse 'pops' on starting, you can buy a electronic switching unit or relay, as used in caravan towing electrics, that would isolate the second battery until the car engine is running and would solve the problem.
- Can Fire department charge you for their service? My Ford Ranger caught fire when I was driving on I-5 in Oregon and got destroyed. It took 40 mins for the Fire Department to show up. By then, everything was burned down. So they basically didn't have to anything. Now they are sending me a $150 bill for their service. How can they do this? I had minimum liablity insurance, so my insurance company is not covering it. As a tax payer, why do I have to pay for this kind of services? Have you handled anything like this?
- Why won't my 2016 Ford Fusion charge my phone in the 12V port when the car isn't running? My old car could charge my phone without the car running in at least on of the outlets. Now in my new Ford Fusion now of the ports will let me charge my phone without the car running. Any way I can change a fuse to allow my car to use one of these ports without the car running?
- 12v outlet (cigarette lighter) in my 2009 Ford Fusion seems to have come loose. How can I fix this? There's still power coming to it, if I hold my phone charger in a certain angle it will work, but I can't constantly hold the charger while I'm driving.
- New alternator and battery but battery still won't charge in my ford explorer 93? My battery wouldnt charge So i just replaced my alternator a few days ago knowing it would fix the problem. It appears that the alternator was not the problem. I've got a brand new alternor and when i check the battery(running car), it just stays on 12.5V and doesn't go up. I tried using it yesterday and it just drained out on me. I tried 3 good batteries already and checked if they charge in my car but they don't. Oh, the alternator came with a volt regulator.
