I have a 93 Tercel 1.5 with a extreme fuel consumption and very poor gas mileage?

I have a 93 Tercel 1.5. The car is supposed to have a good fuel economy even if it's an older model. I'm not even making 7 miles per gallon eventhough it should it should be making around 25( given that the car is not new) or maybe a little more. Sometimes i only travel 3-5 miles tops and it spends half a quarter of the tank. Sometimes just starting the car uses around that same amount(half a quarter tank), I don't know if it burns so much gas when it's started or is it the map sensor that is running bad. I have been told by the mechanic that the car needs an overhaul, however do you think that is the real cause for this issue? Do you think the map sensor can be fixed or should i change it and that will fix the problem because i don't see any fuel leaks so i really don't know what is causing this excessive fuel consumption since I think not even a ford 250 will burn this much. Your insights will be appreciated.

Ha! Well, unless you drive it in first gear all the time with the parking brake and A/C on all the time… Sounds like a fuel delivery problem. I'd assume it's fuel injection being a 93, check engine light come on? Does it flash a code 44 or something? Being 25+ years old it could be anything!

That IS horrible mpgs. The MAP sensor is easy to replace and does affect the mileage. Check your Vacuum Lines. Tune up and air filter current? What do the Spark plugs look like? They should be dry and light tan or grey. If they're dark you can go up a Heat Range on them. Ask the parts guy. Use NGK spark plugs. The Ignition Coil might be weak too, look at the spark. A Compression Test should be done as well.

You can get a MAP sensor on ebay for fifteen bucks (or at your local auto parts store for $293), and just plug it in. I doubt that would fix the problem though. You could try adjusting the idle, get it to where the RPMs are below 1 when you are stopped. That helped me a lot.

That sounds more like you have a leak. With a 1.5 engine using that much fuel, it would soon fail with the excess gas washing down the cylinder walls. It would probably smoke like hell too. Maybe the parking brake is stuck on. Whatever, don't drive that car unless it is a dire emergency until someone fixes it.

I would guess the MAP or O2 sensors.
