How to lock differential?

I'm a new driver and need some helps. My e350 super duty ford van has one rear tire stuck in the mud and spin; I want to lock differential so that another rear tire can move on. Any advise is afficiated.

I'll bet you DO want to lock it, but you can't. It's either a Limited Slip Differential, LSD, Locker… Or Not. Yours is Not. If you can't pull it out with a Tow Strap you have no choice than to jack up the wheel and fill the hole with sand or whatever. You might want to replace that diff with a locker, probably $1,000 installed… You use Different Gear Oil.

"If you do get an open differential (non LS), you can "trick" the rear into thinking it is a LS by partially applying the parking brake until you get unstuck."

Not gonna happen, Skippy. Your van doesn't have a locking rear differential.

Purchase a posi-traction differential and have it put in.

Pull the cover off and arc weld the "spider" gears so they won't turn. That'll get you out of the mud, but you'll need to have new gears installed afterward. (I'M NOT SERIOUS, PEOPLE) don't start with the thumbs down and sarcastic remarks.

Maybe you'd better have a friend PULL you out of the mud. Much cheaper.

  • Would a 03 marauder differential fit a 97 town car? I'm having some differential problems with grinding at low rpms and uphill so I'm looking to replace it, but I was hoping I could throw a diff from a mercury marauder in for that extra torque and to eliminate the ford one wheel drive dilemma. Would this be possible/cost effective?
  • Differential pressure switch causing check engine light? 1997 Ford Taurus. I don't remember the exact code but it said something was wrong with the upstream differential pressure sensor. The car doesn't run any differently. How do I fix it?
  • Ford ranger rear differential leak? I've noticed a couple weeks ago my differential is leaking on side closest to bumper. Not much. Stuck to the differential. Is there an additive I can use to stop the leak? Thank you in advance
  • Cost for a rear differential gear swap? Very simply I have a 2012 Ford Mustang V6 with the stock 2.73 gears and I ordered 3.73 gears and I wish to have them installed. My local auto body shop is asking $1000 for the installation + gear oil + engine retune (apparently that s needed when you jump gears like that). Is that a fair price or should I look elsewhere?
