Does the rental car have to be the same make?

My car is currently at the ford shop getting fixed, I wanted to get a rental car which they said they had to go through my insurance. I did and they said I could get a car and taht it will cover up to $30 per day, however when I went to the rental car companie they said the rental car had to of the same make as the car that is in the shop, ford. So they said all they had was really big truck, which was $30/per day and we had to cover for the tax. Because of the truck size I decided not to get the car. Has anyone ever been through a similar situation or know if this is true?

It's called transportation replacement or loss of use coverage, and the insurance company doesn't care what kind of vehicle you rent. I've had customers call me and complain about their rental vehicle because it wasn't cool enough or wasn't even the same type of vehicle as theirs (ie: they had an SUV and the rental company gave them a sedan), and I had to explain to them that a) all you need is something with wheels and a motor for the few days your car is in the shop and b) it's only for a few days so don't worry about it. I've never seen an insurance company care one way or the other. Insurance companies just cover the cost up to their stated maximum, nothing more.

I think the rental agent was either grossly misinformed or pulling your leg. That's because cops, rental agents, body mechanics and dealers don't know half as much about insurance as they think they do. The only "restriction" I have on my insurance in regards to a rental is the insurance company will pay up to $30 per day. I can rent something for that or less, or if I want something larger, I have to pay the difference. Usually, you are entitled to something similar in size to your car. That is the most bizarre thing I have ever heard, whoever said that has NO idea what they are talking about. No that makes no sense, and I have never had any rental car shop say that.
And the money is being paid by the insurance company not the dealer.
I know sometimes when you get warranty work and the dealer offers a rental they have contract with a given rental car company that features their brand cars.
What if you drive an Acura, most rental car stores do not even carry Acura?
Go back to the rental store, let the manager know you were given bad info, and then get whatever car you like best. Ridiculous.

The rental car agent was trying to upsell you to a more profitable rental. I'd suggest you try a different rental company.

The insurance co don't care what you get as a loaner, they just don't want to pay more than $30.

Go down the road and I'm sure another company will find you some deal for $29.95. So NOT TRUE, YOU CAN GET ANYONE UNDER $30.
