Does ford motor co own mazda?

Does ford motor co own mazda? - 1

Not now. At one time in the early 1990's, Ford owned up to 33% of Mazda, the controlling stake in the company. So at that time, Ford copied a few Mazda's and Mazda copied a few Ford's.

When I mention Platform below, that means they share the same skeleton (floor, frame). That's it. Everything else is Mazda designed/made or Ford designed/made.
When I say mechanically, that means they are exact mechanical copies except for the exterior body design and interior design. (And in some cases, the engine and transmission are different, but usually the same)
When I say badge engineering it means everything is exactly the same except for the badge or brand name on the car.

The Ford Probe was a mechanical copy of the Mazda MX-6. (Mazda engineered). Ford made in US Mazda made in Japan.
The Ford Fusion was a mechanical copy of the Mazda 6. (Mazda engineered, but both made in the US)
The Mazda B Series pickup was a badge engineered Ford Ranger Pickup. (Ford engineered) Both made in the US
The Mazda Tribute was a badge engineered Ford Escape. (Ford engineered). Both made in the US
The 2000's Ford Focus, Volvo S40, Volvo S30, and Mazda Protégé/3 share the same platform. The Ford's were made in the US The Volvo in Sweden, and the Mazda in Japan.
The 2007+ Mazda CX-7 and 2007-2014 CX-9 share a platform with the Ford Edge and Ford Explorer and Volvo XC60. All of these were made in the US
The 2009-2013 Mazda 3 and 2012-2015 Ford Focus shared the same platform. The Mazda is made in Japan and this generation of Ford in England.
The 2011-2014 Mazda 2 and 2011-2016 Ford Fiesta share the same platform. The Mazda is made in Hiroshima, Japan and the Ford Fiesta is made in England.

That is where their relationship ends. Back in 2008 (I think), Ford sold their 30% of their shares in Mazda. Mazda was able to buy itself back so now Mazda is its own company again with Ford owning only 3% of Mazda. That is when Mazda went with their own strategy with the newer 2013 or newer Skyactiv cars. The 2013+ Mazda 3, 2016+ Mazda 2, 2013+ Mazda 6, 2013+ Mazda CX-5, 2015+ Mazda CX-3, and 2016 Mazda CX-9 do not have any connections to Ford in any way. All Mazda Miatas (MX-5), RX-8's, and RX-7's are completely Mazda engineered and made with no involvement from Ford.

Now Mazda is making small partnerships with different companies. The new Scion iA/Toyota iA is a badge engineered Mazda2. It is engineered by Mazda. The new 2017 Fiat 124 Spyder is a mechanical copy (and interior copy) of the 2016 Mazda MX-5 except for the power. Fiat is using their own engine and transmission.

It still has a small stake in Mazda, but doesn't have controlling stake anymore.

No. There was a period when they owned enough for controlling interest (about a third), but the companies have since cut ties.

Mazda owns 86.6% of itself with Ford owning the other 13.4%.
