Where I can find my 1999 Mercury Cougar key code?

I had my one and only car key stolen over the weekend. I'm being told that since I don't know my key code, that I have to replace my ignition. Does anyone know where I can find the code, does it tell you somewhere in the car? I've called the ford dealership already but they didn't;t keep the code.

Your ford dealer can help you out, and replacing the ignition switch will NOT Help. The key code is found on the security module, which is usually found on a black or white box with large letters and a series of numbers on the outside, located near the firewall, under the dash. The numbers are your factory 4 digit door / keyless-entry code. Ford should also be able to look up the original key code and module's code using your VIN. Ford can also provide the key code to a locksmith to code the key for you.
