Dealer called me for a SSN copy and greencard copy or passport copy after new car purchase 2 days ago?

2 day ago, I just financed a car from a ford dealer and my credit card score is 800.

Everything goes smoothly until this morning, I received a call from the finance guy of the dealer. He said the bank need my SSN copy and greencard copy/passport copy.

That's strange. I applied loans, credit cards so many times before. And I believe I will only give these copies to US government.

Any suggestion?

Thanks!

Added (1). Thanks for all the help. It turned out that Ford Credit just need to verify my legal status.

Here is the result. I took 2 pics for Ford Creidt, so that they could verify and I don't need to worry about ID theft.

1. Covered all the other information of my greencard except my name and birthday
2. Leave only last 4 digits of my SSN card and my name.

Lenders have requirements and stipulations that must be met prior to funding a deal. Among these may be proof of address, proof of income, W2/1099 information, or a SS card/green card. I sell cars in a college town with a LOT of foreign students. This is not at all an uncommon or an unreasonable request. This is most definitely NOT a scam. The lenders want to make sure that a) the buyer is here legally, b) the buyer is going to remain here, and c) the buyer is who they say they are, and not using someone else's identity.

If you ignore this, as some here have mentioned, that's fine, but you'll need to return the car. It's that simple.

Did you finance through the dealer? Big mistake. This is a scam. They just want to get you back into the dealership. The next thing that they will tell you is that they couldn't get you the financing rate that they promised you. They want to jack it up.

If they say that, take the car back to them, and give them the keys. Then, get financing through your credit union, and buy a car elsewhere.

This whole scam relies on you thinking that you already have the car, and you MUST keep it. Nope. If they can't fulfill the contract, return the car to them. Then tear up the contract

Do you already have title of the car and the loan documents? If you have everything already signed, this makes no sense and you can ignore the request. If you do not yet have the loan, a bank is perfectly entitled to request your greencard. This acts as both identification and proof that you are in the US legally.

I have never been asked to show a passport or social security card (rather than just provide the number for a credit check) by anyone even when buying a house. Your greencard is sufficient.

I'd go to the bank and speak with the Manager!
I'd never give my Social Security number to a car dealer unless I was applying for a job there!
Never trust a sales person at a dealer!

You and some of the people here don't seem to understand that when you apply for a loan from anywhere, the bank or finance company needs to check your credit score (not credit card score). The ONLY way to do that is with your SSN. I'm surprised that wasn't asked for by the dealer to fill out your loan application.

BTW, you are not yet financed on the car until the bank gets the information it needs and your loan is approved. Otherwise, you would have to return the car.

Ignore it.

Now thanks to the patriot act car dealers and lots of other people have to run everyones name through a government database. Sounds like they got a hit on you. The financing can be cancelled even if you submit the info.
