Could jump starting a vehicle cause damage to the ABS system?
Like an idiot I left the keys in my van (in the on position) so the battery was completely dead. ( I jump started it from my other car and let it run a while to recharge the battery.
The van (with dead battery) is a full size van, with a 5.4L V8, the other car I used to jump it was a small 4 cylinder. So when I connected the cables the van wouldn't turn right away. I let it sit for a while with the car running, tried again and the van still didn't have enough power, so I revved the car engine for a bit, then the van started and I disconnected the cables.
After letting the van run about 10 minutes I shut it off and tried to re-start. It tried to crank but didn't have enough power, so I jumped it again and let it run longer. Now the van starts fine, but I noticed the "ABS" light flashes once when I start the van and stays on.
Is it possible that I fried something in the van's electrical system while jumping it? Also, any info on what typically causes the ABS light to come on?
The van is a 2003 Ford E350 12 passenger with 5.4L V8.
If there was no problem with the ABS before this event, it has two probable scenarios. Either is it related or it is not. May I ask why are you asking? The ABS system needs to be checked out by a mechanic. As to why the key was left in the car, that is just bad habit. Keys belong in two places, in the ignition or in your pocket or at home. Keys are never ever to be left in a car when not in use. I suspect you were listening to the radio. There's an ACC position for that. Go find a mechanic for the ABS.
Probably need to let your computer re-boot; Get a Manual!
When you drive a car it charges the battery because the revs are higher and will get up to 14.5 Volts. You will not get this on idle so add some revs.
A car will always start better if jumped and left to charge the battery before you start it.

Yes more than likely
RESET ENGINE TROUBLE LIGHTS:
Before we jump to expensive conclusions, try resetting the trouble light. To do this, disconnect the negative cable of the battery for 10 seconds (I prefer several minutes), then reattach it. This will reset all of the electrical systems in the car (you'll have to reset your clock and the engine will run funny until it relearns proper settings). If the ABS light is still on, you likely have an ABS problem.
JUMP STARTING DAMAGE:
If the jumper wires are put on backwards (negative to positive), that might fry some electronics, and possibly damage the ABS electronics.
It is also possible that the voltage regulator was damaged, in which case, it might over-charge the system and excessive voltage might damage sensitive electronics.
- Ford KA keeps needing jump starting? I have a 55 plate Ford KA, I went to turn it on this morning and the battery was flat, got it jump started and drove it round for around 20 mins fine, went to turn it on again and it needed jump starting again, drove it round for a further 2 hours thinking it would sort it, went to turn it on again and it needed jump starting AGAIN. Clearly a car that needs jump starting 3 times in a day has something wrong with it but what could be causing this? Does it need a new battery?
- What parts in an ABS braking system of a 2007 Ford Fusion is rubber or contains rubber? Must know what to buy and replace? I have a contamination of transmission fluid inside my brake fluid reservoir. I know, very bad mistake. I understand what this type of fluid will do to rubber and I need to know the parts of the system I need to buy and replace.
- Ford Windstar 2002 rpm gage jump around then flip all the way over will this cause an issue? When driving the van didn't feel strange or nothing no jumping or anything Drove fine back home how to fix?
- Vehicle damage on Ford Focus? I hit an object and there's damage to the front of my car; the right headlight is almost out of its socket, the Ford sign is completely off in the front, and the hood is about 2 inches elevated. I was going no faster than 15 mph when this happened. Ford Focus, 2006 model. Any trained mechanics, please estimate what my damage cost could be.
