Car starts then cuts out?
Lets try this again basically i have a FORD S MAX 57 PLATE diesel, a friend of mine changed my fuel filter on my car and has a primer pump on the fuel line but now my car struggles to start and when it does start it only stays running for about 20mins, i ran a text on it using a odb and it showing no faults, please help as i have no idea what is going on with the bloody thing.
Try putting in some better oil
If it was running OK before your friend did his stuff, then it seems likely he/she did it wrong. Try going to a garage.
A motor that has air in its fuel lines does not run for 20 mins then stop… Not using an air lock as an excuse .suggest you take to someone like either a garage or someone with a fault decoder… Normally when you prime the filter it runs without problems… A lot of motors today do not actually need bleeding
Perhaps there's air getting into the system because the pipes to the new filter aren't seated properly. May even be a pin hole in the primer bulb itself (that happened to me and I wondered why I couldn't leave it parked facing uphill overnight and have it start in the morning without pumping the primer). Possibly a pipe coming back from the common rail has a small hole in it. Think simple stuff first… Including vacuum in the tank when you open the fuel filler.
Your friend screwed something up.
How long does it take before it starts again, and do you have to prime it to get it started?
The obvious factor here is your friend changing the fuel filter and if you answer the question above it will lead you in the right direction. If you don't have to prime it to get it started again I'd guess something electrical that he bumped or loosened when changing the filter. - possibly the fuel shut off solenoid.
If you do have to prime it then it's probably fuel related and the filter wasn't installed properly. Either way your friend effed up.
See a garage to remove the fuel filter and check if the correct filter was installed and the o-ring was replaced. Make sure the to prime the system after installation. If the issues remain, uou need to see a garage with a scanner that can check engine live data and freeze frame data to check fuel pressure when running and at cut out.

It has been suggested that its my Idle air control valve but i've cleaned that out and it still does it. Also replaced spark plugs. Its a Ford Fiesta 1998. However, it idles fine as soon as I've moved the car. So even when stopped it is fine as long as i have driven it since start up. The issues only happen on start up. Any ideas?
