Can I put 225 60 16 tires on my 2006 ford freestar?
My 2006 Ford Freestar has on 235 60 16 tires on it now. I looked online and I guess the standard size is 225 60 16. I found some 225 60 16 tires I would like to buy and put on it. But, I'm just wondering if that's okay since the current size on the van is 235 not 225. Also… What are the benefits to putting on a smaller size? Any negatives?
I live in Minnesota and winter is in full swing now. If that helps.
The narrower tire will give you better mileage since you don't have as much tread on the highway. Also, in snow the tires will go into the snow instead of staying on top giving better traction and they are less likely to hydroplane.
Angie,
Yes, going with a slightly narrower tire tread width for winter weather conditions is quite accessible. The narrower tire will give you better traction trough snow and ice because there's less resistance. People make the common mistake of thinking a wider tire will give them better traction on snow. This is false because the wider the tire the more resistance you will have. You are good to go with a 225 width tire for winter driving conditions.
A smaller tire creates a smaller contact patch. This means there would be more pounds per square inch on that contact patch (because the vehicle's weight is now resting on a smaller load-bearing area. This is why narrow tires don't hydroplane as easily as wide tires. Narrow tires also work well in snowy conditions.
If your particular van came with the 235 section width tires as original equipment then no, you can't safely go to a P225/60R16 97T. The tires are not just narrower (smaller and narrower contact patch for less traction), they are smaller in diameter and have a lower load carrying capacity (greater risk of overloading and failure). If you want to go narrower the only way to safely do so is by increasing the aspect ratio from 60 to 65 such as using a P225/65R16.

- Can 225/70R16 tires fit on rims that have 225/70r14 tires on them? I have 225/70r14 tires on my Ford ranger. I just got some 225/70r16 tires of the same brand, Cooper, given to me. Will they fit on the 225/70r14 rims or do I need to get rims to fit the 225/70r16.
- I have a 2006 Ford Freestar SEL? 2 weeks ago as I was driving I heard a blast of air then my van wouldnt go. It was still running but wouldnt kick in to gear so i coasted into an approach. I put it in park then reverse n each of the other gears but it wouldnt go. My husband checked the transmission fluid and level and said it was fine. Does this mean I need to replace the whole transmission?
- Will a set of 235/60-R17 tires fit a vehicle with 225/50-R17 tires currently? If they do I'm assuming there would be a MPH difference on the speedometer. Update: The 60 series set is from a 2014 Ford Focus and are stud-less winter tires. They are to go on a 2012 Ford Fusion.
